C. gammons, Oregon state director for Safe-Driving Day, has notified all County 8-D Day direc tors of the record Oregon should try to Improve in the 1955 Ealc Dilving Day, December 1. gammons pointed out that there were 34 traffic fatalities between November 22 and December 12 in clusive In 1854 and the success of S-D Day this year In Oregon will depend largely on the extent to which this record can be im proved1. The fatalities by days include only those persons who died be tween November 22 and Decem ber 12, as a direct result of a motor vehicle traffic accident dur ing that period. On December 1. 10S4, (here were two traffic fatalities in Oregon. and Director gammons Is asking an communities to use every edu cational facility In urging the public to drive and walk that day so thst there will be no fa talities. Safe-Driving Day In 1954 fell on December IS and Oregon went through that dny without any fatality reported during the 24-hour period, which enabled it to match the "no-fatallty" record of Decem ber 15 the previous year. The 1854 8afe-Drlving Day also saw the total number of accidents In Oregon reduced about 40 per cent and an effor'. will be ma.tc to improve that record this year. Nationally, there were II traf fic fatalities on Thursday, Decem ber 2, 1054. the December 2 total being used because it fell on Thurs day, the comparable date In 1954. with Thursday, December 1; S-D Day this year. The President's committee has provided a formula to all State Accident Record Bureaus for re porting the fatalities resulting from traffic accidents on S-D Day and the 21-day period preceding and following the day. The fatalities on December 1, 1055, will be com pared with the fatalities on De cember 2, 1054, Nationally, the fa talities on a Thursday are usually higher than Wednesday totals.
