Langell Valley Rancher Contender In Northwest Grassman Contest A STRONG CONTENDER FOR PACIFIC NORTHWEST GRASSMAN OF THE YEAR It Hoyd Gift of Langell VelUy, who won the 1955 Oraon Stat Grattmen of th Yar eonttt fast month. Ht Is competing against th top gressmen from Washington and Idaho, with tha judges scheduled to nam tha winnar tomorrow. Gift taid that it took loti of work and wtr to convert tha tcabrock land on tha uppar parts of hit ranch into th lush grass paitur ihown at top right. Ha hat developed three reservoirs, on of which represents an improvement of a defunct irrigation district dam, and dug contour ditches to carry tha watar through the rocky land, which wai leaded by airplane. The top left picture lhowi a crew laying out contour ditcfies, and at right center ii a tractor, working on the Willow Valley dam, one of the two Gift built from icratch. In the bottom left -ii Three Mile Flat reiervoir, the other project Gift began from scratch.. A bottom right, Gift (left) points out the features of his bottom land pasture, which he reclaimed' from twaThpy conditions caused by poor drainage, to county contest judges Ray Petersen (secretary), Alvin Cheyne and Rex High. It has taken Gift about seven years to bring the pasture to its present state. The tod from the grass covers the rock, making it invisible to the casual passer-by. The 1,700 acres support about 1,000 head of hir own and other, ranchers' cattle. The 1 1,000 acre feet of water stored In the three reservoirs it a two year supply for the Gift ranch. Wafer from the damt it carefuly preserved, with HHle runoff leaving the ranch. ' Runoff from higher pastures is used on lower pastures, with the final jse being on the bottom lands near the Langell Valley highway.
