The present imposing brick structure replaces the iirst small frame building; that was used by the coiiKi egation tor many hears. This buildiiiR and its additions were destroyed by lire in December, 1048. The church has an interesting history of its growth. Early days of worship fn the Merrill community were recalled this week by Mrs. George Oti'teld. one of the two living charter mem bers of the church. Mrs.- Of field still lives in Merrill. Mrs. Laura Hil!, Longview. Washington, is the second living: charter member. Before the turn of the century, the early settlers of the small com munity at Merrill heard the Scrip tures from Sundav School mission aries who rode through the coun try on horseback or arrived by horsp and buggy. They nvide Ihe Offield home their headquarters. The Rev, W. G. Smith, pastor of the First Presbyterian Church. Klnmath Falls also conducted serv ices at Morrill, Tn 1001, Mrs. S. E. Martin, now living in Piedmont, California, or ganized the Sunday School! The first church gatherings were , in private homes, in a small ! school building located on the pres j ent playground at the Merrill Roc reation Hall aud later in one room of the brick elementary building that burned a few years ago. Mrs. Melissa Irven played the.; organ. Mrs. Jane Mason later Kept the Sunday School group together until it was decided that the con gregation was large enough to build a church In Merrill. There were Methodists, Christ iana, Baptists, Presbyterians and members of other faiths m that first congregation. The Rev. J. M. Ferguson came from Arizona and spent a year in Merrill to help organize the church. The first congtcgalion had l5 members. Before the church building could be completed, the Rev. Ferpusnn was replaced by the Rev. Robert Tweed, a bustling Scot. When it rame tune to dedicate the building, $6 remained to Or Station KFJI 1150 K. C. The cmirch was complulod at a co:.t of $2,100 nnd the dedic:.torv service was held October 23. 1B0G. The Merrill cluiich, oldest in Ihe routheni part of the Klamath Ea sin, onc-tiine center of the Lost River parish, became the mother church of churches later built at Malin and at Tulehike. For 16 months after the original building was dcstloycd by fire, the congregation worshiped in the Mer rill, Recreation Hall. Members Dimmed a new buildintr and the present church was dedicated Sep tember i'u. 1350. The old church bell was niven to the church by lite late Mr. and Mrs. Nathan Mer rill. The Merrills also donated the land where the present church stands. The anniversary sermon will be bronchi by the Rev. Forrest C. Funds for the machinery and other necessary equipment have been borrowed, but It is hoped that within five years all debts will be paid off. Under the leadership of Mr. Tra vaille, modern farming methods and better animal stock are bring ing increased production and bet ter incomes for the families who i share in the experiment. He first v,'cnt to Thailand in 1938 and began his missionary work as an evangelist. His farm program was inaugurated soon nttcr the end of World War II following special training in this country.
