Displays cover the most dramat ic elements of the "Fifty Golden Ideas" for fir plywood construc tion unveiled during the industry's annual meeting at Portland, Ore gon, in mid-June: a plywood mo bile telling the story of industry promotion through DFPA, the story of markets and snipping, a sound color movie showing how plywood Is manufactured, and a fir plywood menagerie: colorful circus animals built from the versatile panels. The entire show is accented by the circus format, complete down to the big red caravan wagons em blazoned with jubilee announce ments. Two. themes dominate the dis plays: "You Can Build Anything With Fir Plywood," and a mes sage to people in plywood mill towns of the Pacific Northwest and Northern California where the show will visit: "Fir Plywood is Made Here Sold Everywhere." The best of the western fir ply wood industry's "Fifty Golden Ideas In Architecture" will be shown in dramatically lighted color exhibit in the Golden Jubilee ndustrial show Tuesday, October 35. It's a free show with all the color and drama of a carnival. It runs from 2 p.m. to 9 p.m. at the Fair grounds Exhibit Building. The display of Golden Ideas will be of partic. liar interest to home owners, home buyers ana others who are interested in things that set the pace" in architecture Some of the ideas are radical and possibly controversial. Others are do-it-yourself items ranging from an imaginative boat bed to an un usual set of triangular tumbler blocks. The ideas in the exhibit showing here are the most dramatic of those unveiled at the plywood in' dustry'a historic Golden Jubilee an nual meeting in Portland in June. The 50 ideas honor the 50th an nlversarv of the west's fir ply wood industry being celebrated with a year-long promotional ef. fort for 1955. This program of which the traveling show, to ply- w o o d mllltowns of tne pacinc Northwest and Northern California is Just one part is expected to spark an Increase of 10 million feet a week in plywood sales. In the "Golden Ideas" are some brand new ways to use fir plywood in home design that arc expected to find their way into general use because of practical' lty and artistic merit. These in elude an adaptation of a Japanese bouse which almost eliminates the need for furniture. It uses, instead, island platforms defining traffic patterns in the home. , Designed by Chris Choate, l.os Angeles architect, the plat forms are incorporated in a four way plan containing new ideas for a small home. The island units in. elude a conversation platform sep arating seating and traffic circu lation, and substituting for an en tire furniture - grouping: living room furniture In the living room and bedroom furniture in that ele ment of the house. A platform consists of 'i-lnch plywood surface raised six inch es above tne lioor. its main sec tlon is covered with thick carpet ing. On that platform, a further elevation (also of plywood: of from four to seven Inches is topped by a low foam rubber cushion to form a divan without arms or back ronqhahjdatwnA Adjoining the divan Is a raised plywood surface about level with the cushion serving as an i end table. The whole element in the pilot model is 12-leet square, mounted on a conventional trame which is concealed by one-inch hor izontal louvers which make the platform appear even lower. Another of the "Golden Ideas" on display in the traveling show Is the indoor-outdoor kitchen devel oped by Anshen and Allen, a team of San Francisco architects. ' This is Dart of an overall con cept for indoor-outdoor living areas in keemnK wun me irenu wwwu blending house and landscape. In this plan, an open central pauo garden is closed off by glass. Ar ranged around tnis in a -u snape is an indoor barbecue area, an all-purpose space (variously a TV room. piayroom, a witucu and a breakfast area. The entire concept is accented by a five-foot high indoor stone barbecue directly nncHu ui uic hnm entrance. The wnoie raea makes a garden setting out of the living - dining - working area. Also amonir the "Golden Ideas riisninved in the show is a new way of using the currently wasted wlthln-wall space. This design by Choate breaks away trom tne con cept that a wall is a flat plane. By widening tne joist space anui- lv. volume within tne wan is con into directly usuable stor age space. The idea memoes lei down leaves, shelves and flat areas of glass which break the wall Into an attractive visual pattern. This nnnnnnt lis Texture One-Eleven (grooved fir plywood) to provide supports for movable shelves. Another of the ideas is a dramat i. i,,,hor.ni. tble built around a Japanese habachi cooker. This de lightful piece of furniture is built of a fir plywood specialty product that, was first conceived as a panel for concrete forms. These are pan els surfaced with a high density resin fiber which Is glass smootn, agate hard, tough and wear reslS' tant. cithers of the "Golden Ideas' are expected to stir the lmagin tions of designers and home own' ers to the possibilities Inherent in the big. easy-to-use modular pan- All of the ideas on display are presented in full color, in large color transparencies or in model form.
