Cities League To Open Meet City officials and other Klamath Falls residents will attend the IKS convention of the League of Ore gon cities which will convene at the Multnomah Hotel. Portland. October 23-29. Hie meeting will observe the 30th anniversary of the founding of the League. Douglas (D-Ill) called today for an end to "gloom and doom" in Wall street because, he said, "God reigns, the government in Washington is still alive and American Institutions are still sound." Douglas said this In commenting on sharp breaks yesterday not only on the New York stock market, hut In those of Paris, London, Chicago and Toronto. The break was Interpreted as a reaction to President Eisenhower's illness. The reason apparently was uncertainty. In what appeared to be a move tn steady things. Secretary of the Treasury Humphrey said yester day: "Our policies and programs are definite and firmly established. There is no reason to anticipate any change. We will carry on dur ing his (Eisenhower's) absence exactly as previously . planned. There Is no reason for others to do otherwise." Electric Chair Takes Slayer BELLEFONTE. Pa. W John Weslev Wable. outwardly calm. died last night in the electrlo chair for the "phantom slaying" of a sleeping truck driver on the Penn sylvania Turnpike. Brought to Rockview State Peni tentiary here yesterday after two desperate last-minute appeals failed, Wable made no last state ment as he walked into the death chamber and sat quietly while watching guards strap him to the electric chair. Four minutes later he was pra nounced dead after two charges of electricity, each 2.000 volts. Wable, 25, of Ohtopyle. a small town in western Pennsylvania, was convicted of the shooting of Harry F. Pitts, 39, of Bowling Oreen, Va., on July 25. 1953, as Pitts slept in the cab of his parked truck. Wable was charged, but not tried, with the slaying of another driver and the wounding of a third on an aDDroach road, all within a few davs and under almost identt cal circumstances. I The petite brunette wife of well to do embroidery manufacturer Michael Mortel today admitted ber part in what waa called an "abor tive murder plot" against her bus band, police said. Mrs. Mortel. 38, waa charged with atrocious assault and battery and assault with Intent to kill and rob along with her brother Albert DeVartl, 35, and Alexander ta falko, a 31-year-old machinist. The manufacturer. 43. attacked in the Mortel apartment here Sun day while his wife and daughter were at church. Is In St. Mary s Hosoital at Hoboken, where 3 stitches were taken to close cuts on his head. Authorities said Rafalko, of Un ion Cltv. Inflicted the beating with a lead bar after DeVarti drove him to the Mortel apartment. In addition, police said DeVartl, of Hoboken. had filled a bathtub with water and that the assailants planned to dump Mortel in it. Polio Foundation Sets Drive Goal NEW YORK (irl The National Foundation for Infantile Paralysis will seek 47, 600.000 in Its March of Dimes drive starting next Jan uary. The goal, announced by the foun dation Monday, is lower than the previous one for the second year in a row. In 1954 the foundation asked for 75 million dollars, the highest goal It ever set. For this year it dropped Its sights to 64 million dollars. The foundation predicted that oolio cases this year would total 30.000 throughout the country and it expected a similar total in 1956. These nationwide totals would be about 25 per cent leas than the average number of cases over the past five years.
