Under the supervision of Walt Thompson, Eagle Scout now with the Forest Service at Crescent, the boys pruned and thinned in a stand of Ponderosa pine. ' Following a short talk by Thomp ' son in which he explained the val i ues of timber stand improvement work, the boys turned to, and with , pruning saws and axes, improved . growing conditions on aoout two acres. It is planned to have sev- eral similar projects in the com- . ing months. The dale for tax es timates is still January 15, but if the final return is fi'ed by Feb ruary 15, no estimate will be re quired. If farmers lile an estimale by January 15, they have until April 15 to file their final return. Another important change con cerns how expenses for soil and nater conservation can be handled. The farmer is now allowed, for taxable years beginning after De cember 31, 1953, to elr.cl either to capitalize or currently deduct these expenses. Howevri , once he choice has been made, it is bind ing for future years, Becker warns. Such expenses can be charged off as current operatu.g expenses up to 25 per cent of the farmer's gross income from farming during the current taxable year. Any cost above 25 per cent may be deduct ed in the following years but riot over 25 per cent oi the gross in any year. Further revision of the tax al lows farmers a faster "write-off' on equipment and farm improve ments, the specialist added.
