I Quiet, son-spoken George Welch, World War ir triple ace who shot down four Japanese planet at Pearl Har. bor, lost his life Tuesday while testing a Jet plane high above the Mojave Deserl. Just what happened to his F100 jet Super Sabre isn't known. Wit nesses said it exploded with a ter rific blast and plummeted to the around like a ball of fire. But offi cials at North American Aviation, Inc., where Welch was chief test pilot, said the blast might have been a "sonic boom" caused when jet pulls out of a dive at high speed. Welch, 36, managed to eject himself from the plane and para chutrid, landing aboui two miles from where his plane crashed. But he was suffering from multiple in juries and was dead on arrival by helicopter at Edwards Air force Base. The plane crashed about 45 mllos north of Los Angeles. When the Japanese attacked Pearl Harbor Dec. 7, 1941, Welch, then a 23-year-old second lieu-1 tenant, became a national hero. He drove 10 miles from bombed-out Wheeler field to an auxiliary field commandeered a F40, took to the air and shot down four Nip planes cefor9 he was forced to land his bullet-riddled ship. Only five other American pilots were able to get into the air that day against the enmy.
