War Ace Dies In Jet Crash
LANCASTER, Calif. I Quiet,
son-spoken George Welch, World
War ir triple ace who shot down
four Japanese planet at Pearl Har.
bor, lost his life Tuesday while
testing a Jet plane high above the
Mojave Deserl.
Just what happened to his F100
jet Super Sabre isn't known. Wit
nesses said it exploded with a ter
rific blast and plummeted to the
around like a ball of fire. But offi
cials at North American Aviation,
Inc., where Welch was chief test
pilot, said the blast might have
been a "sonic boom" caused when
jet pulls out of a dive at high
speed.
Welch, 36, managed to eject
himself from the plane and para
chutrid, landing aboui two miles
from where his plane crashed. But
he was suffering from multiple in
juries and was dead on arrival by
helicopter at Edwards Air force
Base.
The plane crashed about 45
mllos north of Los Angeles.
When the Japanese attacked
Pearl Harbor Dec. 7, 1941, Welch,
then a 23-year-old second lieu-1
tenant, became a national hero. He
drove 10 miles from bombed-out
Wheeler field to an auxiliary field
commandeered a F40, took to the
air and shot down four Nip planes
cefor9 he was forced to land his
bullet-riddled ship. Only five other
American pilots were able to get
into the air that day against the
enmy.
