THURSDAY, OCTOBER 7, 1954 HERALD AND NEWS. KLAMATH FALLS. OREGON PAGE nVB Prison Still Runs OK As Guards Quit B50 Crashes Hear Willows MICHIGAN CIT?, In4. Wl-rV vaikoul ol guards at the Indiana Slate Prison failed to affect the smooth operation of the big peni tentiary today, and slate official said, "The whole strike is a flop." The opinion came from Hugh P. O'Brien, chairman of the Slate Cor. rection Department, who added MAAWP Boss Faces Threat PHILADELPHIA W Dlst. Atty Richardson Dilworth says he will order the arrest dl Bryant Bowles, head of the National Assn, for the Advancement of White People, if Bowles trys to sponsor anti-inte gration meetings here. Dilworth said yesterday that he had seen and heard Bowles claim on television that "he was coming here to do the same Job he claims to have done In Millord, Del., Bal timore and Washington. "I think Mr. Bowles should be notified right now that If he pur sues the tactics In Fniiaaeipma that he attempted In those other cities, I shall promptly issue an order for his arrest for inciting to riot ... He will be given no opportunity to foul up racial rela tions in our city." Bowles said on Tuesday that he was planning to hold a NAAWP organizational meeting here. He was in the city briefly and left without announcing lurther plans. that the walkout "had fitzled out ' However, pickets paraded for the second day at the prison's two main gates, and Merlin Griffith, vice president of the International Guards Union, said, "We'll whip O'Brien one way or arother." Griffith said he was satisfied with the way things were going and added, "if picket lines stay in operation as they have been we'll gain live men a day." An undisclosed number of guards assigned to the midnight to 8 a.m. shift entered the prison on schedule last night by some entrance other than the picketed gates. Prison officials had said a full shift of guards went on duty on schedule at 4 p.m. yesterday. They could not be reached early today for a report on the number working on the midnight shift. Forty-six guards who refused to sign pledges of loyalty to the state or failed to show up for work on the day shift yesterday were sus pended or fired. However, O'Brien said five .were reinstated after they telephoned to say they were absent because they were afraid to cross the picket lines. The suspensions, given guards with more titan six months' em ployment, become lismissals !n 10 ployment, become dismissals in 10 days unless the cases are appealed to the State Personnel Board. O'Brien said 16 applicants for guard Jobs were being processed as rapidly as possible to nil vacancies.
