The appropriation lor The Dalles Is 3 million under the Senate li Iture but 1 million over ihe total approved in. the House. The 2" million dollars for Chief Joseph Is the figure appioved by the House but is S million under Uie total okayed by the Senate. In other actions, the committee reduced funds for a Lower Col umbia fish sanctuary lrom Sl.360, 000 to 1 million, eliminated SoOO, ' 000 approved by the Senate for planning John Day Dam on the Columbia, and accepted the Sen ate figure of S3.800.000 for Albcni Falls Dam In ldano. i Also approved were $125,000 for: planning on Hills Creek reservoir In Orecon: 1110.000 lor planninpl on Eagle Gorge Dam, Wash., and $10,000 for fllood control planning t Colfax, wash. The Huse and Senate previously had agreed on these appropria tions:. Cougar Visits local Ranch The cry of a cougar at dusk, Sat urday evening, June 19, startled Mrs. Otis Metsker, resident of Bhady Pine, as she fed calves in the feed lot on me u. w. nitra ranch, eight miles north of Klam ath Palls on the old highway. Mrs. Metsker looked up to see the animal stretched on a log inside the corral fence. She called for her husband, who was at the house, but before he arrived with a gun the cougar bad leaped the fence and disappeared into the forest. Jerry Martin, owner of trained cougar hounds, was called to the ranch but no further trace of the animal was found. Men and dogs hunted the rocky hillside until af ter dark. . Residents of the area are familiar . with a cougar family that rears ' young in a cave on the hill and Mrs. Metsker believes the one she saw was probably a half grown. ' cub.
