7 $1 r 7 W ' 1 - a ' . '"if . " ' By Ruth King and Milly Ramsby ' ' ' Note: I took 1 2 (wo fairly fugged women representatives from the Herald y f, t. and News for this assignment. When we could get the subject "to light" . . . t s- we took a picture .V. when wa asked pertinent questions we got "You're not '' going to use THAT? So the meager pictorial and printed data is because Ellen l' v Clark plays mora roles EVERY day than plenty of top stars do in a long Broad- . way run (and with no rehearsal . . . strictly impromptu). She doesn't know for sura tonioht whether she'll b dispatching cabs or substituting at KUHS to- ... morrow morning. . All Photos by Milly Ramsby. CLARK started out to be a serious subject with us . . we planned an objective ''round the clock repoVt on how COULD one person be such a sustaining influence and support to the community and so generally and generou'lv contribute to its Innumerable public and personal demands? i FIRST we found that Ellen it essentially spendth-ift with herself and her apparent limitless energy. SECOND (, v . and last) we found that we couldn't be serious with a subject so completely full of humor and so totally lacking In conceit. . ' : ..i ,x. f For example: during one of the hectic "sittings" (so-called) amated admiration prompted th query, "How do BE like this ... 7 ... affable . ,-. agreeable . . . and take everything in your stride . At the moment she was about to have the "sewing-machine" shot of this series taken. With an enigmatic "Ellen" mlle , . , hor response was, "YOU don't see m ALL the time . . . "and taking a long Inventory look at the mending . , , she Said, "Sometimes I fool like THIS!!" and that's when we got tha agony shot (not for publication)....-" .' -i ". ' ' ;i ; .' The pictures, taken at random, when we could catrh "The Woman of Achievement", between achieve ments . . . roproiont only a fragment in a "day with E'len" . . . and although well aware of her civic accomD lishments and domestic "derring.do" ... we finally sol ed how she could be Ouota Club's perfect choice for "Woman of Achievement in Klamath County" . . . (SHI just has more HOURS in her day!). ' And that's about all we got out of having her "smile for the birdie" . . ; except that the pictures show her disnatching at the taxicab stand where she and her husband George work as partners (usually on differ. ont shifts I , , . In her kitchen taking a batch of breed out of the oven (all the friends of son Dick, and daugh tar Nancy, envy the Clark kids' homemade bread). ., She smiles for us in another in th sewino machine olcture referred to above .1 . with her Is that stack tof mending which she had -washed with the rest of the household laundry. She also Irons . . . buys the f ' vww., . .v. ,.,v , aunty , , , iniuain om irim Tnitoreu Toqsry lor i-tancy una n'i. Igually at ease in another role, she is toalad beh'nd a desk at KUHS (where she is "on call" whenever they can snag her from the cab-stand, or a (take your ehoieel house cleaning, pie-cake-reikie baking, deeo freezing, painting or papor-hangino. project) is Ellen, in constant popular demand at KUHS, serenely substi tuting In classes embracing everything from physical edieation. to art ... (Latin too). 1 ' . . Then there's the Ellen dressed for what could be one of many social occasions; She made the dress In the picture which shows hor holding !fcy request . . . w thought she at LEAST should have a HOBBY) vase from her large and beautiful collection of Chinese cloisonne. , . The swishy dress of heavy satin in stripes of many hues; reminiscent of I nostalgic past) beautiful hair ribbons , . . our heroine could be going to a Republican "special dinner" (she's a vital factor in the Republi. nan Citiiens for Bettor Government group)) an American Association of University Women evening function (she's an active memberl; a party at Roamas (ditto)! the Yacht Clubi a Shrine or Elks social event; or to cut a long list short, an "after-five" at the home of a friend. It's not hard to Imagine her golngto ALL of them in ONE day!! ... I Slight pause while changing the typewriter ribbon before adding more to tho partial list of Ellen's various achievements): Scouts . , . many, many hours Including those spent helping to'open or close Camp Esther Applegate; Parents-Patrons ... a helping hand here, too; Library Club, tha same; and oVi and on . . . she's always glvino of herself. And perhaps that's the reason that sha has kept tha trim figuro which once modeled for one of San Francisco's major stores. . NOW there are TWO more statements to be mede. (I) We already know fhaf THAT is black thread on the spindle of the sewinq machine and a white sheet under the needle. (2) That if this same, varied I pace has been maintained for as many years by any other Klamath Falls woman - with NO hired hous.
