AFL Officials Submit Plans MIAMI BEACH, Fla. I A compromise plan tor solving union jurisdictional feuds witnin me n jurisdictional feuds within the AFL was expected to win approval to day Irom the AFL Executive Coun cil. The plan was worked out last main bv a special committee. It reportedly gives AFL unions this choice: submlttuig scraps to Dinn ing arbitration, or leaving them up to previously Ineffectual AFL machinery. Tne problem has long annoyed employers and contributed to lu terunion warfare. It involved rival union claims over what types of work properly belong to particular unions. Employers are often har assed by conflicting union claims over the "right" to perform vari ous Jobs. with, rising unemployment AFL unions have indicated more fre quently a desire to work out con flicting work claims in an orderly manner and the AFL convention in St. Louis last fall directed the AFL council to make some ar rangement. A special committee headed by AFL President George Meany agreed on a plan for the council's consideration today that halfway meets the pronlem. It provides that arbitration, or a binding decision by a neutral, will be offered in such disputes but unions can veto arbitrations and submit their trou bles to the Executive Council. Ft. Klamath Groups To Hold Benefit ' FORT KLAMATH Two public uenent card parties are scheduled to be held In the Civic Improve ment clubhouse during February. The first will be given by members of Cascade Crest, Order of Eastern Star, Chiloquln, Saturday evening. February 13. Bridge, pinochle and canasta -will be played; prizes will be awarded and refreshments served. Composing the general commit tee of Eastern Star building fund to be used for a new lodge hall. On Saturday evening, February 20 the C. I. club will sponsor the second benefit card party, with proceeds to go towards paying off the bill for the new cement foun dation put under the clubhouse last fall. Mountain Fall Kills Student COLORADO SPRINGS, Colo, tf. -An 18-year-old Colorado College freshman, whose father conquered the highest peak in North America three years ago, fell and rolled 400 feet to his death yesterday. The victim was Robert Albert Buchtel, son of Do. and Mrs. Henry Buchtel of Englewood, Colo. Buchtel and three other students were climbing in a rocky region of Williams Canyon near Manltou Springs when the accident occurred. The youth's lather, a widely known surgeon, is an accomplished mountain climber. With two oth ers, he reached the peak of 20,270 foot Mt. McKinley in Alaska In 1961. BT BOB THOMAS HOLLYWOOD Ufi Five years ago, Betty White was a struggling young actress who did TV com mercials for nothing. Today she starts an NBC deal that could net her more than a million dollars In five years. Betty is a bright-faced brunette with a smile that could warm a paivn broker's heart. On TV she sings a little . and talks a little but mostly she glows. She exudes a friendliness that is rare in this nervous age. NBC is banting on this quality to capture the house wife's attention from coast to coast. She has been doing a good Job of it locally. Last year she was named the outstanding personality in Los Angeles TV by the Academy of Television Arts and Sciences. Now she's starting a five-a-week half-hour on the NBO network. ShVll appear with Frank Devbl's orchestra and the Four Jokers, one of the best new acts in show bus iness. "We'll have a nice, easy show," she says. "Not one of those real fast, flam-bang shows that you feel you have to sit there and watch, women are too busy during the day to do that. They want the kind of show they can look at be tween chores around the house." She is frank enough to admit that she's somewhat ilabbergasted by the new project. Only a few years ago, she was doing TV for the experience. Chicago-horn, she came here when she was 2 and grew up In the land of sunshine. Her ambition was to be a singer, but she realized she didn't have enough talent to become another Dinah Shore. So she turned to radio acting and little theater work. That meant being on camera for a large part of 5'i hours. She has probably done more TV than any other girl in the coun try. She continued with Jarvls" re placement, Eddie Albert, then did the show on her own. At the same time, she appeared on a weekly situation comedy. Life With Eliza beth, which is now appearing in 80 cities. Her possibilities as a national commodity were seen by Don Fed derson, manager of her station, who is now masterminding her fortunes.
