arbitration, or a binding decision
by a neutral, will be offered in
such disputes but unions can veto
arbitrations and submit their trou
bles to the Executive Council.

Mountain Fall
Kills Student
COLORADO SPRINGS, Colo, tf.
-An 18-year-old Colorado College
freshman, whose father conquered
the highest peak in North America
three years ago, fell and rolled 400
feet to his death yesterday.
The victim was Robert Albert
Buchtel, son of Do. and Mrs. Henry
Buchtel of Englewood, Colo.
Buchtel and three other students
were climbing in a rocky region
of Williams Canyon near Manltou
Springs when the accident occurred.
The youth's lather, a widely
known surgeon, is an accomplished
mountain climber. With two oth
ers, he reached the peak of 20,270
foot Mt. McKinley in Alaska In
1961.

HOLLYWOOD Ufi Five years
ago, Betty White was a struggling
young actress who did TV com
mercials for nothing. Today she
starts an NBC deal that could net
her more than a million dollars In
five years.
Betty is a bright-faced brunette
with a smile that could warm a
paivn broker's heart. On TV she
sings a little . and talks a little
but mostly she glows. She exudes
a friendliness that is rare in this
nervous age. NBC is banting on
this quality to capture the house
wife's attention from coast to
coast.
She has been doing a good Job
of it locally. Last year she was
named the outstanding personality
in Los Angeles TV by the Academy
of Television Arts and Sciences.
Now she's starting a five-a-week
half-hour on the NBO network.

of the best new acts in show bus
iness. "We'll have a nice, easy show,"
she says. "Not one of those real
fast, flam-bang shows that you
feel you have to sit there and
watch, women are too busy during
the day to do that. They want the
kind of show they can look at be

She is frank enough to admit
that she's somewhat ilabbergasted
by the new project. Only a few
years ago, she was doing TV for
the experience.
Chicago-horn, she came here
when she was 2 and grew up In the
land of sunshine. Her ambition was
to be a singer, but she realized
she didn't have enough talent to
become another Dinah Shore. So
she turned to radio acting and little
theater work.
When TV started to blossom, she

Her big break came years
ago when she was signed to play
the "secretary" of Al Jarvls on
a daytime show over KLAC (now
KCOP). That meant being on
camera for a large part of 5'i
hours. She has probably done more
TV than any other girl in the coun
try. She continued with Jarvls" re
placement, Eddie Albert, then did
the show on her own. At the same
time, she appeared on a weekly
situation comedy. Life With Eliza
beth, which is now appearing in
80 cities.
Her possibilities as a national
commodity were seen by Don Fed
derson, manager of her station,
who is now masterminding her
fortunes. He analyzes her appeal
thusly: "Women like her because
she isn't In competition with them.
