CAMERA CHATTER By DAL SWOGGER Flash Shots for Groups "Why do the people In the front row of my group flash pictures seem properly ex posed, but those In back seem to be too dark?" This same question has been thought of by many of you and though there are a number of remedies, let us discuss the most easy correction. If we at first realize the reason for this effect of darker background, It will make It easier to i understand the correction. Light" from the flash bulb Is brighter closer to the source of light, which Is generally the camera. As the distance Is Increased and we get farther from the flash bulb tho light from this bulb has less effect on the exposure of our picture; therefore the closer the subject is to the camera In our flash shot Uie lighter this subject will be in comparison to subjects behind or farther from the camera. For example, we have 3 people In a picture to be taken by. means of flash: subject No. 1 Is 8 fect from Uie camera Subject No. 3 Is 7 feet from the camera Sub ject No. 3 Is 9 feet from the camera. The 3 subjects arc sitting on the couch and We are taking the picture at an angle look ing down Uie couch If sub ject No. 1 who Is nearest the camera looks good, as far as exposure of the film Is con cerned, we have subject No.- 3 and especially subject No. 3 getting too dark on the final print. The first solution is to al- ways try and "Oroup" the. folks ,ln posing for a flash shot keep the people in more of a "line" and nearer the same distance from the camera or light source. This "grouping" or keeping folks on the same plane from the cam era is the easiest and most simple meUiod to use in cor recting this uneven exposure. Remember though, In your flash, if camera is adjustable, always measure your distance ' and get the correct exposure. If your camera Is not adjus table, on your farther (9 feet and beyond) pictures you can use' a No, 25 of press No. 5 bulb. If your picture is to be closer (8 feet and nearer) you can uso a midget such as PP 3 to keep your closer picture from being "burned up", or . over exposed.
