The light streak at the base of the mushroom is believed to be burning brush set afire by the terrific heat. The top of the mushroom has just been lighted by the first light of day while the base and stem are still in darkness. The flash was seen in Southern Canada and deep in Mexico. Insurance $6 Shy of Paying For May's Fires Fire Insurance companies just about bore the entire burden oi fire losses in the city during May. Fire Chief Roy Howe m nis recap of last month's 15 city fires, re ported losses totaling $2,510 and Insurance collected as $2, SIM. Total value of property directly threatened by the blazes was $1,746,968 and total Insurance on the property was $1,564,016. Defective wiring was the prin cipal olfender; five of the 15 fires were attributed to tnai cause. three were causea by not meiais including forgotten electrical ap- Dllances. two were caused by sparks, two by overheated or de fective flues, one oy friction and one by a careless smoker. No one could say what the cause of the outbreak was. but freakish weather was mentioned as a possible reason in some miarters. The U. S. Department of Agrl. culture said its survey showed par ticularly heavy army worm out' breaks in Maryland, Pennsylvania, Indiana and Tennessee. MORE PESTS In addition. The army worms concentrate on grass crops such as clover and grains like barley, rye, wheat and corn but If supplies run out they readily turn to tobacco, tomatoes and other garden crops. They are about an inch and a quarter long, thick as a pencil, and have a smooth greyish-brown appearance. After they have eaten their fin within the next two weeks in most sections, they go underground ana emerge In the fall as moths. The, tent caterpillar (furry, lncn and a half long) also becomes an autumn moth, but digests its feast of leaves on tree branches. . All of the nests are night eaters, which means that the men armed with sprays of DDT, arsenate of lead and Paris green are hand!- capped in daytime extermination efforts. In a speech prepared for the closing session of the AMA con vention, Bowers gave some exam ples of how atomic energy has quietly been saving lives: Radioactive atoms, which can be traced wherever they go, are In effect making the human body transparent. Doctors can learn where drugs go, how diugs do their good work. They can learn how glands work, even what part of living cells do the work whicb saves or. preserves health. . Mysteries of the adrenal glands are being solved with the aid of radioactive atoms. This has aided in treatments of rheumatoid arth ritis, and rheumatic- fevci, the great heart-killer among children. Radioactive iodine is helping in treating diseases, including cancer, of the thyroid gland. Bowers con tinued. And there are hopes that cancers elsewhere in the bodv can be treated by finding chemicals which will eo just to those cancers. Those chemicals could be made radioactive, to go to the cancers and then give off atomic rays which would kill the cancer cells. New research.
