BIGGEST The atomic mushroom rises above Yucca Flat
near Las Vegas, Nev., following the 4:15 a.m. explosion of the
most powerful atomic bomb'ever set off in the United States.
The light streak at the base of the mushroom is believed to be
burning brush set afire by the terrific heat. The top of the
mushroom has just been lighted by the first light of day while
the base and stem are still in darkness. The flash was seen
in Southern Canada and deep in Mexico.
Tent Caterpillars, Army
Worms Harvesting Mightily
By The Associated Press
Two of mankind's toughest to
sect foes army worms and tent
caterpillars are voraciously ram
paging in record hordes in several
sections of the country this year.
A check by Associated Press bu
reaus brought such comments as
heaviest infestation in 20 years,"
. . "worsening by the hour" . . ,
'million dollar damage to crops,'
and comment by the U. S. Depart
ment of Agriculture that prelimin
ary results of a survey now under
way showed a "general outbreak"
of army worms from tne tast uoast
to the Mississippi.
At Watertown. N. Y.. tent cater
pillars blanketed railroad tracks In
such hordes that a freight train
was delayed 35 minutes as wheels
skidded on the pulpy mass. Minne

Insurance $6
Shy of Paying
For May's Fires
Fire Insurance companies just
about bore the entire burden oi
fire losses in the city during May.
Fire Chief Roy Howe m nis recap
of last month's 15 city fires, re
ported losses totaling $2,510 and
Insurance collected as $2, SIM.
Total value of property directly
threatened by the blazes was
$1,746,968 and total Insurance on
the property was $1,564,016.
Defective wiring was the prin
cipal olfender; five of the 15 fires
were attributed to tnai cause.
three were causea by not meiais
including forgotten electrical ap-
Dllances. two were caused by
sparks, two by overheated or de
fective flues, one oy friction and
one by a careless smoker.
Fire Inspectors made 103 inves
tigations and 19 hazards were cor
rected. Biggest blare the firemen buttled
last month was on May 30 at the
St. Francis Apartments. 628 Osk.
It was mysterious fire wmch
started in a bureau drawer of a
tenant who was out of the city at
the time. Some of the apartment
furnishings and a large quanlty
of clothing and other personal ef
fects were desiroyea.
That same day proved to be
the most hectic one of the month.
Shortly before 11:30 that night,
the firemen had three alarms in
three minutes from three differ
ent parts of the city. Fortunately,
the alarms were caused only bv
high winds swaying electric lines,
causing Ihrm In aic in a fiery but
harmless display of sparks.
FALLS. OREGON
sota was ready to do battle, with
tne most complete pest control
program in 30 years, against what
experts have predicted will be the
state's "worst tent caterpillar uv
testation" In history.
LESSER PESTS
Two other insect oests were re.
ported out in major force In more
limited areas. Massachusetts is
contending with gypsy moths that
are expected to strip, trees of their
foliage across 25,000 acres; and the
grape steely beetle Is Uagulnir
vineyards in an area around West-
neld, N. y.
serious lnicstations of army
worms were reported from Illinois,
Indiana, Ohio. Missouri, West Vir
ginia. Kentucky. Maryland, Pemv
sylvania, Virginia, Louisiana and
Tennessee.
Tent caterpillars are concentra-
ted in Now Jersey New York
Minnesota, Wisconsin, Washington,
Georgia and Maine. No one could
say what the cause of the outbreak
was. but freakish weather was
mentioned as a possible reason in
some miarters.
The U. S. Department of Agrl.
culture said its survey showed par
ticularly heavy army worm out'
breaks in Maryland, Pennsylvania,
Indiana and Tennessee.
MORE PESTS
In addition. It reported damage
In Illinois and Indiana by. tne coin
flea beetle and harm to the cotton
crop in some sections of the South
by the boll weevil.
The army worms concentrate on
grass crops such as clover and
grains like barley, rye, wheat and
corn but If supplies run out they
readily turn to tobacco, tomatoes
and other garden crops. They are
about an inch and a quarter long,
thick as a pencil, and have a
smooth greyish-brown appearance.
After they have eaten their fin
within the next two weeks in most
sections, they go underground ana
emerge In the fall as moths.
The, tent caterpillar (furry, lncn
and a half long) also becomes an
autumn moth, but digests its feast
of leaves on tree branches. .
All of the nests are night eaters,
which means that the men armed
with sprays of DDT, arsenate of
lead and Paris green are hand!-
capped in daytime extermination
efforts.

Atomic Energy Has Saved
Mare Lives than It's Taken
'"W" W
By ALTON L. BLAKESLEE
AP Science Reporter
NEW YORK w-Atomle energy
already has saved many times
more lives than the 80,000 lost by
atomic bombs exploded oxer Jap
an, Dr. John Z. Bowers said today.
Bowers., dean and professor of
rudinblolosv. University oi Utah i
College of Medicine, told the Am- I
erican Medical Association (AM A)
that, the life-saving has come I
through the use of radioactive!
atoms in medicines.
In a speech prepared for the
closing session of the AMA con
vention, Bowers gave some exam
ples of how atomic energy has
quietly been saving lives:
Radioactive atoms, which can be
traced wherever they go, are In
effect making the human body
transparent. Doctors can learn
where drugs go, how diugs do
their good work. They can learn
how glands work, even what part
of living cells do the work whicb
saves or. preserves health. .
Mysteries of the adrenal glands
are being solved with the aid of
radioactive atoms. This has aided
in treatments of rheumatoid arth
ritis, and rheumatic- fevci, the
great heart-killer among children.
Radioactive iodine is helping in
treating diseases, including cancer,
of the thyroid gland. Bowers con
tinued. And there are hopes that
cancers elsewhere in the bodv can
be treated by finding chemicals
which will eo just to those cancers.
Those chemicals could be made
radioactive, to go to the cancers
and then give off atomic rays
which would kill the cancer cells.
New research. Bowers said,
promises better methods of pro
tecting humans against radiation
from A-bombs.
It's ridiculous, apparently, to
