This Is a good question, since a ruptured disc la one of the most common and unpleasant causes of backache. It is not, however, as has been pointed out many times In this column, the only cause for backache. First, what to a disc? The In tervertebral disc is a moderately oft cartilage which lies between the bony vertebrae of the spine. It in these cartilages which make It possible to bend the back in other words, they give It flexibil ity. However, since cartilage is softer than bone, the discs are more likely to be Injured, strained or otherwise damaged than the Bony vertebrae themselves.
