K . ,.- Oh. come on. now Be a sespa Please, You'll really stand out from me crowd, once you're a sespag. What Is a sespag? Well don't lauiJ.i a sespag is a member of the So ciety for the Extension of Sym pathy to People Afflicted with Gout. J Civilisation has needed an or ganization of . this kind for a long time. Every other disease in the medical textbooks has its true blue friends today from halitosis to hernia, from acidosis to acute al coholism. But gout? Ha. ha. ha, ha, ha, ha. ha, ha, ha I Nobody lakes gout ser iously today except those who sut- fcr from it. Madness and measles ' gout. Gout also hits plumbers and are respectable. But gout? "Oh, no, painters, as a result of lead poison not really gout? Ha, ha, ha, ha, j lac ha!" ipi'ZZLE COMRADES What puzzles me Is whv it stryck It is nign time we naa a nation- al gout week so the buddies of this ailment can band together and get more public understanding. I ieel this way because I have just spent five days flat on my back with a throbbing loot propped on a pillow. Whep I returned to work, lean ing with quiet drama on a new $5 cane, I naturally expected to be rewarded with a little milk oi human kindness. When an office pal asked what was wrong with my foot ' I mumbled bravely : "Oh nothing much. The doctor calls it rheumatoid arthritis." "That's just a fancy word for gout," he said. "So you got the gout, eh? Ha. ha. ha. Boy, you must have been doing some high living. Ha ha. ha." So he passed the word along, and the office became a den of laughing hyenas "Ha ha. ha. ha, ha. ha, ha. ha! He's got the gout. Wish I could afford it." Well, there you are. Tell some body you got the gout, and right away he Jumps to the conclusion River-Damming Action Amlts OK of Congress By JOH.V KAMPS WASHINGTON W The score in Congress thus far this year on jnulti-mlllion dollar river damming programs is two down, and a third : strikeout seems more than pos sible. .A bill to authorize the 800-million nllar Central Arizona project in the Lower Colorado River has been etuck in the House Interior Com mittee nearly a year. There's no sign it will be dusted off for final action noon, and there's doubt that the commltee would approve it. The House interior reclamation and irrigation subcommittee began hearings late last month on a bill to authorize the 357-mlllion dollar Hells Canyon Dam on the Snake River in Idaho and has set no re sumption date. Strong opposition and comments of committee mem- Four Killed sBy Race Car DAYTON, O. tfl A racing car spun crazily out of control into the Dayton Speedway grandstand Bun- day. Reid had planned to drive the "car in the 500 mile speed classic ""at Indianapolis May 30. He had been driving since the end of World War II, mostly In midget and "hot rod" competition. The aocdient happened during the ""first trial heat. Reid's raoer went JJout of control near the tpo of a bank for a turn. It spun through retaining wall, shot through a standing-room crowd, ploughed into a paint barrel, and hit the grand-""atand.- Track officials said they did not , think Reid's car hud mechanical (. trouble, but they gave no immcd- iate explanation for the crash. The races resumed 90 minutes later. Joey James of Van Nuys, Calif., won. DOUBLE Green Stamps on Wednesday CEC'S Signal Service 76 Main St. (Boijh I you've been swimming In port wuie I and pork rousts That is the trouble. People don't understand there two kmds ot Rout rich man's gout and poor man s gout. K:cn man s roui is uk old-fashioned kind caused by lux urious living and enjoyed il should use such a wordli by British lords and 19th century American Indus trial tycoons. This kind of gout is dying out. Poor man's gout is best described by the Encyclopedia Britannica as lollows: "Gout may also alfect persons who observe the' strictest temper ance in living, and whose only ex cesses are In tne direction oi over work, either physical or intellec tual." Naturally, you understand that what I had was the poor man's me. Too much temperance? uver' work? Or could it have been the aftermath of chewing too mtny lead pencils in grammer school? Gout strikes chiefly in the big toe, the heel, and instep, or the thumb. I'm a heel and instep man myself. Personally. I have never met a thumb gcut sufferer. It's probably a tough occupational problem with hitchhikers. Many people don't realize how gout feels. It feels as if an invisible madman were trying to stuff a white hot anvil into your foot. You have an urgent tiesire to bite to death anybody that ccmes within three yards of you. If anybody ,u the same room even breathes heav ily, you can feel it. A lly landing on your foot is like a knife thrust. Never laugh at a man wim the gout, podner, unless you want to make a lifelong enemy. But pat him on the back gently, gently and tell him you understand. He won't believe you. but he'll remem ber, and if ever you have to borrow money well, you won't have to go to arty bank to get it. bers suggest the subcommittee will Ivote against the bill, !
