PAGE EIGHTEEN HERALD AND NEWS, KLAMATH FALLS. OREGON THURSDAY, FEBRUARY 7, 10B2 Leap Year Valentines f Set Mood For Romance friendship. The Romans, however, had been celebrating Feb. IS for several cen turies as the Feast of Lupercalin, dedicated to the pastoral god, Lu percus, and the goddess of love, Juno. As a part of the gay festivities, Roman maidens placed their mime in an urn set up in the public square, and courageous bachelors were allowed to draw one name each to determine their "blind dates'' for the" ycjtr. Eventually, because of pressure from the Christian Church, which felt the Romans were up to no good, the two holidays were merged and thought of as an oc casion for remembering old friend ships. Dan Cupid was not to be out done. Sweetheart Valentines begun appearing In about the year MOO A. D. At first, to elude vigilant fathers, they were hidden In hol low trees that served as tiysllng places. Usually these love messages were anonymous lor safety's sake Sometimes they were left on a lovely lady's doorstep by a bash ful suitor who knocked and then promptly ran away. Valentines had pi'cttv rough go Inn In Uie years that followed, but thev always emerged victorious. Without sufficient evidence, It is difficult to say whether the wom en or the men were responsible. In this year of the quest, how. ever, many a woman may wish that the olden days, when Valen tines came to be considered equiv alent to a proposal of marriage, might be revived. There's lit la hope for this. Mod ern man, alas, has been given too much freedom. To protect the timid woman who may feel reluctant to express her sentiments too freely, many 195 'J Valentines "pop the question" In a whimsical way. After all, you ran overdo a good thing. But whether serious or cas. Hal, men who receive Valentines had better make It a point to read between the lines, There' where the trap may lie. The 1952 Valentines, with their curtains of lace, tiny pressed flow ers and scented satin puffs tall touches of the nostalgic "good old days") have definitely been cre ated with the women in mind. And, frankly, they may prove to be too much for the stronger sex. II proof is necessary for the skep tics, take a look at history. The whole business of St. Valentine's Day started because of a young Roman priest who was to be be headed on Feb. 14 . 370 A. D., for refusing to renounce Christian ity. In prison, on the eve of his exe cution, he wrote a farewell letter to console the Jailer's blind daugh ter, signing it "From Your Val entine."
