V. O. Spencer. Vancouver, told state police he was driving peace fully along the Pacific highway 24 miles north of Vancouver when he spotted a tall Cottonwood tree topp ling into the highway. He slammed on his brakes, but did not escape a crushed car hood. Spencer said damage totaled $246.31. He ran to the base of the tree, found It had been gnawed through by a beaver. The beaver wisely had disappeared. Chief of Police Keith Jones has announced that police patrols will be Intensi fied. Jones said that many thefts dur ing the past several weeks have been done by highly skilled and cautious criminals.
