Scout Ruth Aberle By DEB ADDISON "Daddy, it was my Scout training the ssved me." X imagine that each person In Kelso who made donation to the Community Chest had a nice, warm flow under the ribs when that statement was made by Ruth Aberle, the Old Scout who was lost In the woods. Each could think: "I helped provide the training that saved that girl" Mrs. Arnold Oralapp. whose avocation Is Oirl Scouting, re marked, before this story was in the papers, that if the girl had real Girl Scout training she would be found all right. Teach ing youngsters how to take care of themselves In emergencies is definite part of the Scout train ing program. ADDISON , "s easy to become cynical about donations to such things as the Community Chest. And with the government taking money away from everyone for cradle-to-the-grav welfare, it's easy to say, to heck with contributions to the In dependent agencies. Still, if you don't give to the Community Chest there will be no funds for Girl Scouts and similar organizations. And girls like Ruth Aberle won't be able to say, "Daddy. It was my Scout training the saved me." - a t a m Chet Bamaker says the Klamath County Com munity Chest fund now Is 87 per cent completed. That means that if no more contributions are made, the Klamath Girt Scouts win be IS per cent short of funds this owning year. Chest headquarters are closed, but donations still will be gratefully received t the Oir! Tne problem has ceased to be primarily a mili tary one, though Chiang Kai-shek 1 prepared to continue guerrilla warfare throughout the length and breadth of the country. It has become chiefly poimco-econouuc wiu empnasis decidedly on the economic COMMUNIST Leader Mao Tse-tung now is faced with the monumental task of providing the smews of life for approximately one fourth of the world s population. These millions are scattered over a land which is one third greater than continental United States a vast area that has been im poverished by long years of war. Many parts of China are hungry and 111 equipped to meet the winds of winter. And the Chinese, like the rest of humanity, think with their bellies when hunger overtakes them. The Chinese Communists have led the horse to water, and now have to make it drink. They realise wnai vney are up against, for the Red New China news agency In a dispatch from Pelptng admits that the Communists are In serious economic and fi nancial dunculUes. This message quoted General Mao as saying: "Our situation can be generalised as follows: There are dfflculties but there are ways and means and their is hope." Fred Hampson. veteran AP correspondent in China, reports: Inflation is rampant again. Price controls have broken down. Discontent Is widespread tn buth cities and countryside. Unemployment Is at dangerously high levels. Taxes are high and getting higher. There are Reports already of food shortages In some district. Well I should say it flu in with our idea that the masses trunk with their bellies when times are hard. The Chinese masses arent politically conscious. em uiry are economically conscious. It goodime Votiirabout Tift inurahc " Boyle's Column Washington Column Guessing Farm Prices Still Far From An Exact Science By FETES EDSON unoninviUIl, tWEAJ On C t gain the economic farm prophets have proved themselves not as amart as they thought they were. This time .they have had to show red faces on their hog caning. Two season in a row, now, there have been official cries of alarm that the farmers were producing too many pigs. There have been dire warnings that the market would be glutted and that prices would go below the farmers' costs of pro duction. The only. alternative offer ed to save this situation was that the government would have to go Into a big hog-buying program to support the market. A year ago, when there was con siderable fear of. a big surplus spring pig crop, th situation was aaved by the purchase of many million dollars' worth of pork for urat amain ana otner Marshall Plan countries. That took the sur plus pig population off the market Van consumers, at fairly high prices. While the Brannan farm income support plan was before the last session of congress, there were again predictions that a bumper crop of pigs would glut the market this fall. The prospect of the gov ernment having to support hog prices was freely predicted as like ly to cost the taxpayers as much as 1250,000,000. This was cited at the time as one good reason why the Brannan plan was better than the present farm price-support pro gram. But matters havent worked out that way at alL and th mmn. have been confounded. Two things seem to have happened to prevent the catastrophe so freely predicted last summer. One factor Is that consumer r. mand for pork has been heavi er than anticipated. With a big corn crop making feed available at rea sonable prices, and with plenty of pigs in the pens to eat it up, the It left a reduced supply for Amer- supply of pork has been good' and CARNIVAL By Dick Turner STufcE. rtwnYWM mwm. mt. v. inttg, r-t-wr-Brr. I "It (Mint Waldo didn't drtch me after all ht lust fol lowed anothor shopper who used th tarn nrf..m. i wm wearing!" the prices have been relatively tow er than for other meats. 2nd Factor The second factor is that farmers this fall have been marketing their hogs at lighter weights. Instead of fattening to 300 pounds, they have sold more hogs at 200 to 33S pounds. This practice has been in accord with the department of agriculture suggestions to market hogs with more lean meat on them and not so much fat. The result of all these nraytl has been that hog prices have been IS cents to $1.20 a hundredweight above support price levels through out the fall. And the government nasnt naa to enter the market to buy up any surpluses. The fall run of pigs to market usually begins in September. In creases during the next two months, reaches a peak In December, then falls off again in the two months following government support prices are varied from month to montn in an ellort to create an even run of hogs to market throughout this period. This year the sunnort nrlm m 117.50 per cwt. in September, 416.40 In October. $15 In November, llano iot uecemoer. it Is $15.50 for Janu ary and $18.20 for February. uiot Unlikely There is Still a nnalhltl( h-t farmers may be holdlns bayk- mm. of their hogs to market later at aravier wetgnts and for higher iricea. nm marketings have been irom zo to 40 per cent heavier than normal so iar tnis fall. So the llkell nooa or a glut Is minimized and the predicted fall hog market crisis n . muiiis to come on. JORDAN, M. D. The danger from carbon monox ide poisoning Is always greater In winter than In summer. Because of the cold weather houses and ga rages are likely to be shut up tight and fresh air does not circulate as it doe In the summer. This means that a furnace, heater, or running motor 01 an automobile in a closed garage will produce carbon monox ide which may not be promptly dl luted with good fresh air. The exhaust of a car, for example, pushes carbon monoxide into the air. This is an odorless gas. When breathed In, this gss combines with a portion of the blood known as hemoglobin, the tissues are starved for llfe-glvlng oxygen. It quickly causes unconsciousness and death soon after. Wateh For Symptoms When only small amounts of car bon monoxide are present warning symptoms may be present. These are usually headache, dizziness. esire to vomit muscular weak' ness, and a generally uncom. fortable feeling. It is onlv when large amount of carbon monoxide are present that the victim becomes drowsy and unconscious so fast that inese otner symptoms mav be naus ea oy. A person who has been exposed tc caroon monoxide should be re moved from the bad air at once. Artificial respiration and giving oxygen a soon as possible are de sirable. Fire department crewa. nn. nee, ana is company emDiovM are usually trained to give rapid emergency treatment for this form of poisoning. II there Is such a thing as chronic poisoning from carbon monoxide one would expect It to be found In people who are exposed to small amounts of carbon monoxide for long periods nl time, such as those working in certain mining opera tions, about furnaces, or In garages. The Doctor Answer QUESTION: What win stop or remedy a bad circulation has been left arm or hand which has been present for several months? ANSWER: I cannot teU without knowing the cause of the poor cir culation. This should be investigated before any treatment like massage or special exercises should be tried. mry Civil Rights Showdown Shaping Up Hv JACK MIL WA8H1NQTON, Dec. 19 WV-Ad-ministration democrat counted to day on swift political profits to flow from plans for civil rights show, down in the next session of con grrns. Previously, two-thirds of the sen stars voting could end debate on a bill. But this rule didn't apply on motions to take up a measure. The new debs' limitation applies to a motion as well as a bill.
