donation to the Community Chest had a nice,
warm flow under the ribs when that statement
was made by Ruth Aberle, the
Old Scout who was lost In the
woods. Each could think: "I
helped provide the training that
saved that girl"
Mrs. Arnold Oralapp. whose
avocation Is Oirl Scouting, re
marked, before this story was
in the papers, that if the girl
had real Girl Scout training she
would be found all right. Teach
ing youngsters how to take care
of themselves In emergencies is
definite part of the Scout train
ing program.

dependent agencies. Still, if you don't give to the
Community Chest there will be no funds for Girl

And girls like Ruth Aberle won't be able to say,
"Daddy. It was my Scout training the saved me."

munity Chest fund now Is 87 per cent completed.
That means that if no more contributions are made,
the Klamath Girt Scouts win be IS per cent short
of funds this owning year. Chest headquarters are
closed, but donations still will be gratefully received

Guessing Farm Prices Still
Far From An Exact Science

This time .they have had to show
red faces on their hog caning.
Two season in a row, now, there
have been official cries of alarm
that the farmers were producing
too many pigs. There have been dire
warnings that the market would be
glutted and that prices would go
below the farmers' costs of pro
duction. The only. alternative offer
ed to save this situation was that
the government would have to go
Into a big hog-buying program to
support the market.
A year ago, when there was con
siderable fear of. a big surplus
spring pig crop, th situation was
aaved by the purchase of many
million dollars' worth of pork for
urat amain ana otner Marshall
Plan countries. That took the sur
plus pig population off the market
Van consumers, at fairly high
prices.
While the Brannan farm income
support plan was before the last
session of congress, there were
again predictions that a bumper
crop of pigs would glut the market
this fall. The prospect of the gov
ernment having to support hog
prices was freely predicted as like
ly to cost the taxpayers as much as
1250,000,000. This was cited at the
time as one good reason why the
Brannan plan was better than the
present farm price-support pro
gram. But matters havent worked out

ide poisoning Is always greater In
winter than In summer. Because of
the cold weather houses and ga
rages are likely to be shut up tight
and fresh air does not circulate as
it doe In the summer. This means
that a furnace, heater, or running
motor 01 an automobile in a closed
garage will produce carbon monox
ide which may not be promptly dl
luted with good fresh air.
The exhaust of a car, for example,
pushes carbon monoxide into the
air. This is an odorless gas. When
breathed In, this gss combines with
a portion of the blood known as
hemoglobin, the tissues are starved
for llfe-glvlng oxygen. It quickly
causes unconsciousness and death
soon after.

The senate has a new rule,
