PACE SIX Ups, Downs Of Living On a Hill Br BILL JENKINS MUHY would anyone wsnt to " Ilv on a hill? That question cam up durtiig th Informal coffe meeting this morning at th oltlce and brought up aom varied comment. Living on a hill In Klaniath Falli. It seems from the talk, takes not only a sincere love of living on a high place. It takes nerves of steel.' boundless patience and a good, stout set of tire chains. The boas and myself ara at both ends of the question. I live at the foot of a hlU so I don't have any trouble getting home during the anow season. I Just top the hlU and slide In like an otter. The boss lives at the top of a hill and has a heck of a time getting home. He has to claw his way up the icy slope. Of course. It all evens up when we start for work. Then I do the clawing and he does the slid ing. Lois brought up tha point that living on a hill went far back Into antiquity, to the days of the Greeks and Romans who lived on the brows of the penlsular hills so they could look down on the people below them. It seems It was only a bridge of time because a decade or so ago nobody would build a house unless he was on top of a hllL They built the house first arid spent the rest of their time figur ing ways to get home after a hard snow or a bad freeze. There's no getting around It thst the guy who lives - on the level (ground, thst Is) does less shovel ing and less grunting, and con siderably less grumbling about the Ills of hiU dwelling. Anybody considering moving out of their hill homes? Nope. They'd rather be mad. I OOKS like a touch of winter has moved In, but It's not as bad as It was last year. Then It snowed for the first time on the 25th of September and kept It up pretty steadily until March. This summer has come close to being like the ones we used to have eight or 10 years ago. Lots of warm weather, plenty of sun to loaf In and a good spring. Even tough winters like last on would be reasonably easy to take If we could pay off with good summers. Preferably without a hard frost in June, of course. ... THE human mind can be a re tentive thing if the Interest is aufflcientiy aroused. If you don't believe it Just sidle up to any of the groups surrounding a radio right now listening to the world series.
