ORECON THURSDAY, OCT. 4, l4t Cottle Market Unsettled; Portland Good Llvtock markets were unsettled during the last week of September, according to the weekly cattle end hKt review prepared by the OSC extension service from USDA r poru and other data. Cattle receipt at Portland the first of this week were larger than any other Monday in more than three years. Over 3200 bead arrived for the first day'i trade. Prices held fairly well on Monday although it was definitely a buyer's market and some animals were unsold. Arrivals later in the week were hpht but the yards had not completely cleared for Thurkday a trading, even though quotations declined 50 cents on must classes and were a dollar or more below Monday on some cows. Differences The cattle situation at Chicago and most other markets was quite different from Portland this week. Receipts In the midwest were, sharply curtailed and live prices worked higher despite a dull and weak to lower dressed beef trade. ( At Chicago slaughter steers werei 25 cents to a dollar higher com pared to last week s close. Most ad vance was on common and medium kinds with extremes up a dollar fif-1 ty. Hellers and cows were luiiy . to 60 cents higher. Cattle slaughter for the country as a whole dropped t per cent last week and was 6 per cent below the same week of 1948. But the cattle were heavier than a year ago and carcass weights totaled a little j more. Calf slaughter and veal pro-; due uon were up for the week but below a year earlier. Beef and veal wholesaled steady to two cents a pound lower at Pa cific coast markets this week. Most of the decline was in cow and bull beef. Trends were similar at Chi cago and New York where most grades of steer and heifer beef were " off a cent and cow was off three to five cent a pound. The Oregon state employment service will provide parking and loading space on the 3rd street side of the employment service, 3rd and Main, for farmers to load their po tato pickers. India's exports of manganese, an Important dollar earner, have been stepped up sharply this year. The com merce ministry reports exports in the first eight months totaled 384. 893 tons compared with 194.569 tons in the same period last year. Much of the ore goes to the Unit ed States for stockpiling purposes. Farm Prices Show Gains In September For the first time In halt a year, average prices received by United Stairs farmers aliowrd an advance, according to the weekly farm price, crop and weather review prepared bv the OSC extension service from USDA reports and other data. The government Uidex on September IS stood at 349 per rent ol 1910-lttM. That was a 1 6 per rent inrrease from mid-August, but was 14 per cent brlow a year earlier. Higher average prices lor beef cattle and hogs contributed most to the upturn, although dairy products and poultry and eggs also in creased. The Index of livestock and products increased nearly 3 per cent for the month. Crops as a whole showed a decline of about one-half of one per cent. Soybeans, potatoes, rice and dry brans showed the sharpest decreases this month. Parity Index Down The parity index continued to de cline. As of mid-September, this In dex stood at 34 per cent of the 1910-1914 level. That was a I of about one-half of one per cent for the month, and was 3 per cent brlow mid-Srptembrr 1948. As a result of the higher price index and lower parity index, the purchasing power of farm products rose slightly during the month. The ratio of prices received to prices paid, interest and taxes, but not in cluding farm wages, stood at 103. County Agent Charles Henderson reported recently. J. D. Vertrees. an OSC graduate and recently employed at J. W. Kerns company haa taken over Elings' position here. Elings came to Klamath Falls from OSC In July. 1947. and had taken a very active part In agri cultural matters during his stay.
