The big view is a subject of some controversy among old-timers. It is from the Maude Baldwin collection and was provided by Hal Ogle, who doesn't know just where the little, scrawny building was located. Fred Peterson, the -county school superintendent, whose nam hoi been given to on of lh buildingt pictured on the oppoiit page, thinks the picture thowt the old Whit Lak ichoot. Whit Lok wot a community that started with big ideot at th edge of a branch of Lowr Klomoth lak west of Merrill, along about 1905 and 1906. It got big enough to hove a tor or two, a bonU, and a imoll population, and then blew out like an old tir. Fred thinks that the picture show the old originol school, ond he doubti i it was octually in use when the view was. made. After school wos held in o smoll building, it moved over into o lorger structure which hod been built for the Whit Lok bonk. Fred opines that this Ricture must have been taken on a day when th kids went back to visit the abandoned one-room shack, ond notes that doors, windows and chimney are gone. Schools were bod in those days, h soys, but not thot bad. But h isn't entirely ur this is a pictur of th Whit Lok school. If othrs hov opinions on th question, Th Herald ond News would b glod to heor from them. There isn't ony question about th other school pictured on this page. If Is the old Upper Langell school, which wos locoted near th present Ma Ion dom tit. Th pictur wot token by Peterson himself, about 1913. There't o ttory about that, too. Fred took pictures of oil of th tchool buildings In th county ond mode o display of them at o county foir held in 1914. Th disploy wos put up on Main street ot about Fourth ond Main. There wos a lot of difference In the oppearance of th various schools, ond local pride wos stirred by the comparisons that wer -mod. .M : l-V . ..... . . l i .rTT77- - People from districts with poorer schools got their tails In the air ond wanted to do something, whil those from th better-equipped districts took on o supercilious air. Th result: A wave of school building in th nxt yar or two, with substantial general improvement. The Upper Langell school wos on of those to rploced. The old building in the picture wos abandoned for a better one, ond along about 1 930, the better one was abandoned as better transportation made it pos sible for kids from there to go to Bonanza to school.
