By BILL JOHNSTON , PULLMAN, Wash., Juno 7 m j Much of the Hooded Northwest has water, water everywhere and not a drop fit to drink. From North Idaho to the Oregon coast and across Canadian prairies, flood victims lace the problem of getting pure water and milk. There won't be enough health ex perts to advise everybody In some communities, so the sodden sand bag brigades will have to become sanitation specialists, too. Oliver Johnson, Washington Stale college sanitarian, has some know how in such matters. "All milk should be pasteurized and all water boiled until positive assurance Is received from health authorities (hat danger of contam ination Is past.'' Johnson says. He offers this formula for pas teurizing milk at home: Heat to 170 degrees and cool Immediately or heat to 145 degrees and hold the temperature for 20 minutes. If you don't have a suitable thermometer, bring the milk to a boll and cool It immediately. Household water should be boiled 10 minutes. If your well has filled with flood water, here's what Johnson sug gests: Pump the well out thoroughly and allow It So refill. Then add one quart of sodium hypochlorite solution i common household bleach) per 1000 fallons of water. Htlr the solution into water in dug wells with a long pad dle and wash down the walls. For driven or drilled wells, the solution must be pumped Into the bottom of the well through a long hose. Next, pump the treated water through the entire water system un til you can detect the odor of chlor lng at every faucet. Then the fau cets should be cloaed and the solu tion allowed to stand 12 houra. Thirty-six of Idaho's 44 counties contain minerals of commercial Importance.
