HERALD AND NEWS, KLAMATH FALLS, OREGON MARKETS and FINANCIAL GRAINS SLIP AT OPENING CHICAGO. May 34 MV-Grains slipped at the opening today and never were able to recover completely tne lost ground. Initial selling was based on weather developments, which Included over the week-end rains In the Southwest wheat belt and clear skies In the Mid-West. Receipts of wheat in the Southwest continued to run well ahead of a year ago. Wheat closed to 1 cent lower, July $3.33-13.34, corn was S-l lower, July 2. 1374-12. 13't, oats were lower to S higher, July M'-81, and soybeans were 2 to 4 cents lower, July 3.8-3.87, Wheat- July Sept. There was early Improvement for scattered rails, oils and steels. While some of these held their gains, ad vances for many Industrial shares were reduced or turned into small declines in afternoon dealings. Total transactions for the day were In the neighborhood of 1,700, 000 shares. New 1948 highs were attained at times by Pennsylvania Railroad. American Telephone. General Mo tors, J. I. Case, American Smelting. American Woolen, International Paper and Electrical & Musical Industries, although some of these slipped later Into losing ground. Retaining narrow gains were Gulf Oil, Southern Railway, Youngstown Sheet, Chrysler and Owens Illinois. Losers Included Goodrich, Sinclair Oil, Richfield Oil, American Can, Westinghouse Electric and Allied Chemical. Steel had the benefit of estmates that production this week was scheduled at the highest rate since the week of March IS, which was the 1948 peak to data.
