While trends were olten confused, the features of the mixed market were: 1. A decline In new crop corn contract. 2. Relative strength In May corn and May oats, largely a result of covering by previous short sellers. 3 A tendency for May wheat to ease while deferred contracts held firm. The easy undertone In May was based on Uie action of May "WieafcS a'cenU lower to 3'i higher. The market pushed upward right from the start, when the ticker for a short period failed to keep up with an overnight accumulation of buy ing orders. After early gains for assorted liquors, oils and rails were shaded slightly In quieter trading at mid day, motors provided the spark for a new advance. Despite profit-taking sales, the day's improvement was fairly well maintained. Aided by the fastest first hour i 660,000 shares since Monday, tran sactions for Uie full session ran to around 2,700,000 shares. Holding fractions to more than a point higher were General Electric, General Motors, Chrysler, Pennsyl vania Railroad, Anaconda Copper, Schenley, DuPont, Sinclair Oil (which reported record production), U.
