The old atore and every thing elae at Yainai hae long atnee been removed. where he carried on hla bualneag for many years, and It stilt stands today. The picture which I enclose Is of my father's first atore. In Yalnax. Ore., which Is a ghoat town today. Il was about five miles from the present town of Bprague River, and was a sub-agency and Indian training school for that end of the reservation. After these were closed Wolford and Wann, two young go getters, who bought thla atore from futhrr. pint led the town of Hprngue Hlver. and moved over there bug and baggage, as a fine new mill was Just opening opera tion.. Thla atore building was built In 1903 by an Indian carpenter by the name of Davey Venneman. And right here I would like lo puf In a good word for the Indiana of that generation. They were for the most part reliable, Industrious and competent. The man you see standing on the front porch la young Frank Applegate, the oldest son of CapL O. C. Applegate, and the clerk. The two little girls are, the small er, Margaret Kgoeri. wnose father was the sub-agent at Yalnax, and who took the picture. Across the road. In a field, and under a lante pine tree. Is a HtUe grave, sur rounded by a white picket fence; the baby sutler of Margaret Is burled there. She was barn, lived briefly, and died In this small out post of clvtlmtlon 45 years ago. The taller girl Is myself. The other man seated on the porch Is John Bias, also an Indian policeman. The policemen. If I remember cor rectly, received the huge sum of thirty, dollurn a month, their unl- lorms nun tne unuue 01 auuiuruy. Hprlng ( rrea At this time I wish to correct a recent iiilMUteinerit In The Herald and News news Item concerning the locution of Hprlng creek being in the Wood river area. Wood river valley him enough in Its own right lo be proud of, without presenting It with Hprlng creek also. While Hprlng crnck Is the only one of lis kind, and need riot Uke second Dlace Ut any natural beauty In Oregon, only Outer luke excepted. II Is In the Wllllamnon river area five miles above Chtlouuln. Need less to add we In tills section are very proud of Its perfection. This month I will have lived a half century In Klamath, but for the periods that 1 went away for schooling. I have been proud and content lo have spent, the best years of my life here, to have watched the great progress and developments of my country, and to know that there are still great er ones to come. And I am more aware of thla. this spring, as I realize our great natural resources, especially our water, which so many other states wish wistfully that they could capture, somehow. The untimely snows that I hear so many people berate, make the sturdy forests, the lui.h grass, the fal cattle, and the fine crops ol which we boast In our annual re ports. And so to quote my first boss, beloved Capt. Lee. who was so long Klamath's popular asses sor, and also famed for his potent mint Juleps and four lovely daugh ters, whenever he wished to plan for the future, "If the Lawd Is willing." I hope to see many more years In Klamath. Altamont Sets 'Fun Night' Thursday night has been set for Class Pun Night for Altamont Jun ior high school eighth grade.
