Iaan officials said the Depart ment of Veterans' Affairs, which administers the act, has loaned more than $3,500,000 in Uie two and a half years since the start of opera tions. Nearly three millions of this amount were loaned in the past year alone, and the rapid growth of the department's business, according to "Loan Officer A. J. Crose, Is due mainly to the fnct thnt the state legislature in 1947 libcraliied the loan act to permit veterans to bor row up to JttOOO to buy homes and farms, and streamlined the act to permit speedy processing of applica tions. Starting In IM8, loans per month ran well over S300.000 while for March alone the figure exceeded 1500,000. ' Veterans who were Oregon resi dents before entering service in World War II are eligible to apply. They may borrow up to 75 per cent of the appraised value of the home or farm being purchased, to a max imum of (6000. Interest on the loan Is at four per cent. Under todays conditions, the average time allowed to repay Is about 12 years. This means that the veteran who borrows 14000, for example, on a 13 year repayment plan, will repay at the rate of about $35 a month, plus taxes which the department collects and la turn pays to the county an nually. W. F. Gaarenstroom, department director, recently was authorized by the department's advisory committee to Issue a second (5,000.000 in bonds to finance the loan fund, since the first five millions probably will be exhausted by about July 1.
