The market a lower at the start, but quickly rallied above the previous close, corn led tne advance. Reports of weakness In cash wheat at both Minneapolis and Kansas City did not have much Influence on futures. The basis on spring wheat at Minneapolis was down 3 to 4 cents a bushel while at Kansas City No. 1 hard wheat sold at 19 cents over the May future walnst S3 cents Saturday. The commodity Credit Corporation announced wheat purchases at Kansas City, Minneapolis and Chicago, but the periods over which Uie buying; was mane differed. The Chicago office bought 605,000 bushels from noon Thursday to noon Friday, Minneapolis bought 60.000 from noon Friday to noon Saturday, and Kansas City bought 1,3115.000 from noon Thursday to noon Friday. It was said the Kansas City Saturday buying would be made public tomorrow. According to trade reports, offerings to Uie CCC at Kansas City again were heavy today. Wheat closed 3 to 3'4 higher, May 2-34'i-. (corn was 3',-4'i higher. May $2.15-2.16, oats were m-4', higher. May $Ul-, and soybeans were t cents lower to 4 cents higher, May $3 44. March 22 ff Strong spots persisted in today's stock market on one ot the largest volumes of the past year although many leaders faltered. Profit cashing In the wake of the recent bulge appeared after a speedy opening. While gains running to a point or more were well distributed near the close, the minus column was widely populated. For a good part of the Initial hour the ticker tape was as much as t minutes late for the first time since last May. Blocks of 1000 to (WOO shares were numerous. The tint hour total of 720.000 shares was a top since December, 1946. The pace subsequently slackened prices wavered but turnover at about 2,000,000 shares were among the best since mid-April a year ago. Inclined to stumble were Santa Fe, Southern Railway, Northern Pacific, U. S. Steel, Bethlehem Steel, Caterpillar Tractor, Douglas Aircrait, united Aircraft, Lockheed, Anaconda and Standard Oil (NJ). In front most of the time were Du Pont, General Electric, Union Carbide. Allied Chemical, Johns Manville. ' Eastman Kodak. Good rich, Firestone Tire. Goodvear, Deere, American Smelting, Twen tieth Century-Fox, Loews, United Air Lines, American Airlines, Union Pacific and Atlantic Coast Line.
