Why and how these could go east I do not know as I am Jut a farmer." (A B. F. Newberg. Orel All the.se puzzlers will br handled I" the one continuous explanation below. Being "Just a farmer" ha not hindered one iierson from con ducting a commendable research which has revealed the astronomi cal fact that stars apparently move eastward aerf.-s the lower northern sky. Those mentioned were doubt lis In the handle of the Dig Dip per If the earth'? North Pole were extended out to Inconceivably great (ii'tancr. It would touch a sky s)ot ury close to the North Star. In our latitudes this star meusurrs about half way up from the north ern horizon to the zenith, although It seems considerably higher. Ap proximately and poetically then we may say that the earth turns on tlie North Star In a clockwise di rection. Although we cannot feel this rapid motion of the surface. alMiul 700 miles an hour In our part f.f the world, we can see a sort of nverse reflection of 11 by looking a. the stars, for I hey appear com pletely to enrlrcle the North Star in a counter-clockwise direction once In 23 hours 58 minutes. All star south of the North 8tar. and extending entirely to the southern horizon, seem to move westward; those seen below 'north of) this pivot star go eastward and never set. In mid-March at midnight the Big Dipper I almost overhead and 1 moving west: at 6 a. m. In the northwest and sliding down (north) with Uie bowl leading as usual; it noon, low In the north and of all things going east as our corre- spondent discovered. At 6 p. m., I oui celestial drinking cup Is In the northeast and 1 climbing up isouthi while dangerously balanc ing on the end of It starry handle. The earth's revolution around the sun causes all star to come to certain position four minutes earlier each succeeding night.
