cal fact that stars apparently move

extended out to Inconceivably great

our latitudes this star meusurrs
about half way up from the north
ern horizon to the zenith, although
It seems considerably higher. Ap
proximately and poetically then we
may say that the earth turns on
tlie North Star In a clockwise di
rection. Although we cannot feel
this rapid motion of the surface.
alMiul 700 miles an hour In our part
f.f the world, we can see a sort of
nverse reflection of 11 by looking
a. the stars, for I hey appear com
pletely to enrlrcle the North Star
in a counter-clockwise direction
once In 23 hours 58 minutes. All
star south of the North 8tar. and
extending entirely to the southern
horizon, seem to move westward;
those seen below 'north of) this
pivot star go eastward and never
set.
