TRYING to think straight in line with these challenges In the news this writer has been turning over i in his mind this morning this ques j tion: j "What reason could I possibly have for refusing to give to the Red Cross this year?" This is the only truthful answer: "Because I am too tight lo part with the money." THE are still in the shadow of two wars the one that has Just "ended" and the new. one that MIGHT B'.GIN if somebody's foot slips. War, AS WAR, is horrible and cruel and barbaric. In time of war, the Job of the Red Cross Is mercy and help. In time of peace, the Job of the Red Cross is to bind up the wounds and help to soften the in justices that are born of war. TN time of war, if your wife or mother died, who got you leave to come home? Why, the Red Cross, of course. EVERYBODY, then, was schem ing for leave. Every kind of racket was tried to get it. When REAL TRAGEDY hit, it was like the boy who cried "Wolf!" But the Red Cross was BELIEVED when it said: "This boy has to get home." TN time of war, who organized the blood banks to provide the precious plasma that saved lives that other wise were lost? The Red Cross, naturally. Such things are its Job. In this Interval of "peace," who goes to bat when a veteran has to have help and have it QUICK? Oh, the Red Cross. That Is Its peace time Job. We take that for granted. And so on, through a long list. TJONT snoot the Red Cross. Its job Is bigger than coffee and dough nuts. It is a PERPETUAL Job. The world needs mercy. So Big! Churchill Sees Third World War LONDON, March 6 W) Winston Churchill said today: "Any thinking man can see that we are all moving Into a terrible situation at home and abroad. The former prime minister gave these views in a letter to Frank Harris, conservative candidate in a by-election at North Croydon. torium, were Diane Bechtel. Mrlba Bates. As they sang, even the most unpracticed ear could detect the long hours of training and the perfect tuning which naturally results In fine music. Last, but far from least, go tributes to the heads of the music depart ment. Andrew Loney Jr.. who di rected the greater portion of the band numbers and who also doubles as head of the music department: John MrManus. who is assistant conductor and directed the thrilling Huldtgungs Marsch from the suite. "Sigurd Jorsalfar": John A. O'Con nor who directed the Girls Glee, and also to Freeman Yount and Mrs. Patricia Hunt, members of the music staff. So varied is the scope of the music department that it has been found necessary to divide this year's con certs into two sections. Next Thurs day night, March 11, the orchestra, a cappclla choir with Catherine Blanns, soprano, and the Instru mental and vocal ensembles, will give their concert.
