TRYING to think straight in line
with these challenges In the news
this writer has been turning over
i in his mind this morning this ques
j tion:
j "What reason could I possibly
have for refusing to give to the Red
Cross this year?"
This is the only truthful answer:
"Because I am too tight lo part
with the money."
THE are still in the shadow of two
wars the one that has Just
"ended" and the new. one that
MIGHT B'.GIN if somebody's foot
slips.
War, AS WAR, is horrible and
cruel and barbaric. In time of war,
the Job of the Red Cross Is mercy
and help. In time of peace, the Job
of the Red Cross is to bind up the
wounds and help to soften the in
justices that are born of war.
TN time of war, if your wife or
mother died, who got you leave to
come home?
Why, the Red Cross, of course.
EVERYBODY, then, was schem
ing for leave. Every kind of racket
was tried to get it. When REAL
TRAGEDY hit, it was like the boy
who cried "Wolf!"
But the Red Cross was BELIEVED
when it said: "This boy has to get
home."
TN time of war, who organized the
blood banks to provide the precious
plasma that saved lives that other
wise were lost? The Red Cross,
naturally. Such things are its Job.
In this Interval of "peace," who
goes to bat when a veteran has to
have help and have it QUICK? Oh,
the Red Cross. That Is Its peace
time Job. We take that for granted.
And so on, through a long list.
TJONT snoot the Red Cross. Its job
Is bigger than coffee and dough
nuts. It is a PERPETUAL Job.
The world needs mercy.

power outrages of many hours at
times. The line has been under con
struction for about a year.
Erection oi poles and stringing of
wire has been completed for some
time, out from Davis Creek south

Churchill Sees
Third World War
LONDON, March 6 W) Winston
Churchill said today:
"Any thinking man can see that
we are all moving Into a terrible
situation at home and abroad. Not
only bankruptcy and privation ap
proach us In this Island, but the
menace of a third World War
rolls toward us with every act of
Russian Imperialist aggression and
communist violence and Intrigue."
The former prime minister gave
these views in a letter to Frank

Sweeping by, it stands out unfailingly
from the highway crowd, unmistak

year's trimmest fashion plate.
I3ut have you traveled in one of these

Have you seen for yourself how
smooth and silent is its flow of power,
how hushed and quiet is its ride?
This comes from many things. From
Fireball power now Mi-Poised for

And it comes, in addition, from a
brand-new development we call
Sound-Sorbcr top lining.
It's a thick pad of feathery insulation
much like that you use in your own
home, and it goes into every
closed model in our 1948 Sun H and
Roaum astkr series.
This new lining cloaks your Buick in
new and delightful silence nkin to that
of your own living room silence that
encourages normal-tone conversa

enjoyable throughout the whole car.
So you ride in quiet as well as beauty
when you travel in this style star.
You find it a great-hearted lovely that
is soft of voice and gentle of manner
a delight to the traveling car, the guid
