FRIDAY, FEB. JO, 194i ACE TEN HERALD AND NEWS, KLAMATH FALLS, OREGON Pelicans Nail Down District Cage Pennant MEDFORD. Feb. JO The Klamath Falls Pelicans nailed down the listrict 4 high school basketball championship here last nifshl with t vengeance and also by 35 point. The final score was 88-23 over the Medtord Black Tornado and the game could have been halted any where along the line with the Pelicans holding a substantial majority. Next atep for the Pels Is the state hoop tournament at Eugene, March 16-20, but the Klamath boys have three conference games "yet to play. Including a return tilt with the Tornado tonight. The 35-polnt margin rolled up by the fancy-shooting Pelicans was probably the largest acorca against Medford In the history of man and iven though the Tornado hasn't on but one league game this year, men a bulge wasn't expected. The Pelicans showed amazing ac turacy, hitting approximately 60 per sent of their shots and contributing rerv little indiscriminate backboard ratiling. Likewise the defensive rame was good. Jack Morris' six points was high for the Tornado tnd the usually-high scoring Tom Mottern was limited to four. Jack Lust covered Mottern like a sweat lull. Leroy Johnson, 18-year-old broth er of Clarence (Honey Chile) John son, collapsed and fell unconscious last Tuesday while training. Dr. Michael Scott removed the blood clot that night. A week ago Dr. Scott performed a sim'lar op eration on Ed Franklin, Philadel phia heavyweight who collapsed at the end of a fight with Bill (Chicken) Thompson. Franklin's condition was described as good by the hospital. JoeKahut Signs For Next Bout PORTLAND. Feb. 20 Joe Kiihut. the Woodburn farmer boy who is making a comeback along the heavy weight fistic trail, will be featured in a 15-round scrap here March 3 with an opponent not yet selected. Roy Hawkins, formerly of Klam ath Fails. Bill Pelerdon of Seattle and Bobby Zander of Los Angeles are being talked as opponents for Jolting Joe. Kahut would rather have Zander because Bobby holds a 10-round decision over the big fellow and that was the match that caused Kahut to go on the shelf for over a year. A proposed fight between Jack iGingeri Snapp of Klamath Falls and former Middleweight King Al Hostak probaoly will follow the Kahut fight by two weeks. Snapp earned the fight with Hos tak by knocking out Bobby Volk several weeks ago, but the fight is rather difficult to arrange for Port land because Hostak would rather fight in Seattle and probably would draw more gate In that city. Last week at Berkeley the Bears dropped in a thriller, 48-47, and Hangar accounted for 14 points. Last month he hung up a school scoring record of 27 in whipping use. UCLA and Stanford figure so-so.
