HERALD AND NEWS, KLAMATH FALLS, ORECON SATURDAY, FEB. 14, 1948 PACE Pels Rub Out Prior Defeat By SOC Quint Visiting Joyvecs Dumped 41-32 On Klamath Hardwood Less than a month ago the Klam th Union high school Pelicans came out on the short end of a 68' SO score at Ashland, the worst of the few defeats the Pels have had tilts season, but last night the black spot was rubbed out. The Pelicans clubbed the Southern Oregon col' lege Junior varsity 41-32 In the re turn game on the local court. The game was Klamath's all the way with the exception of a couple e' minutes at the start when ths BOO Juniors took a slight early lead and then again just before the half when the Pel defense fluttered long enough to allow In two baskets and two free tosses for a 14-H tie. ONLY MOMENTARY That lapse was only momentary and by the time the half-time butzer sounded Klamath was again out front, 20-14. Superior speed of the Pels began to make things tough for the Southern Oregon boys in the third quarter, but not before Arlle Weaver, Keith Wade and Baldy Foster had gone on a rampage to bring the collegians up within two points of another tie, 28-26. Wilbur Elliott and Jack Kennett came through with steals at the right moment and biokc up the threat The collegiate lineup contained two former Pellcan-s Baldy Foster, '43 grad, and John Unman, '46. Weaver and Wade were the high scorers at 12 and 10, respectively. Bob Barnes was high for Klamath With eight. It was a rather successful home' town night all around. In last night's preliminary the KU Frosh clubbed the Medford junior high cuuic, 37 to 22. DiMag Settles With Red Sox SAN FRANCISCO, Feb. 14 WV Dominic DiMaggio has signed his 1948 baseball contract with the Bos ton Red Sox. The "little professor" withheld eomment on the terms, reached after a brief holdout. However, he Is reported to have settled for $28. 000. DiMaggio said he had heard nothing of any plans to trade him. He will report to Boston ready to take over his regular duties in centra-field, he said, adding, "If they have any other plans for me I haven't been told." Ducks Get By Idaho At 43-41 EUGENE, Ore., Feb. 14 The Oregon Ducks grabbed a narrow margin In the closing minutes last night and clung to it to scrape out a 43-41 victory over the Idaho Vandals in a northern division Paci fic Coast conference game. The Vandals had led all the way until the last nine minutes of the game. Controlling the ball through out the first half and shooting only when the chances were good, they had a comfortable 27-20 lead at half-time. Guard Reedy Berg dropped in a free throw to give Oregon a 36-35 lead. The Ducks still had the same narrow lead at 41-40 with three minutes to go and then Guard Stan Williamson of the Ducks potted a short set shot to boost the margin to 43-40. As Oregon tried to stall, John Evans converted a free toss for Idaho IVi minutes from the end to make it 43-41. With 45 seconds to go. Idaho broke up the Oregon stall and Forward Preston Brimhall ran In for Idaho's last-chance hook shot. Dick Wilkins blocked the toss that could have tied the game. A tightening-up of Oregon de fenses in the last half gave the Ducks their victory. They held Idaho scoreless In the first five minutes of the second half. Brimhall of Idaho led the scoring with 12 points. The Oregon leaders were Williamson, Wilkins and Bob Lavey, each with eight. The same teams play here again tonight In the only northern divi sion game on the schedule. Youth Program Given Praise LA GRANDE, Feb. 14 W La Grande's youth recreation program, which last month provided weekly entertainment for over 1200 young sters, was called by city commission ers today after an official Inspection of program "well planned and exe cuted." The program, financed principally by the La Grande Elks club, oper ated at an expense of less than $80 last month. Classes In subjects ranging from archery to dancing are offered at the weekly sessions held at the city high school. Over 30 instructors supervise the recreation program. Dusette grabbed the first fall In the five-round event, pinning Sto jack In a full nelson In the second round of a cleanie battle. Stojack caught his airplane spin In the final frame, and was awarded the battle after Dusette was unable to get to his feet at the bell. At Williams left his usual winner's circle last night, walking out with a draw against scrappy little Buck Davidson. Davidson drew first blood with a fall In the second round the hold was a reverse crab. Feb. 14 The Merrill VFW basketball team has scheduled an exhibition game for Monday night with the Iowa Ghosts, colored touring quintet. The game will be played on the Merrill high school gym floor, with a preliminary yet to be arranged, starting at 7:30. The Iowa Ghosts feature some of the country's best negro players and put on a circus performance along with their basketball. They have played and won some 70 games this season over the country. Feb. 14-Three Cot tage Drove men and one from Dorena were fined a total o.' 1706 by District Judge Chester Andcrsnii after entering pleas of guilty to spotlighting deer. The men were Robert R.
