II PACE 4 V Control Of Weeds Needs Big Effort The need lor more fundamental knowledge of weed behavior and plant physiology was determined as necensary IX weed control programs are to keep pace with new develop ments In weed control chemicals. This need was expressed over and over by weed research specialists at the Western States weed control conference held in Sacramento last week attended by approximately 600 persons from eleven western states. In addition to slate weed control specialists, farmers, dealers, chemi cal company representatives, county weed control supervisors, commercial applicators, extension sen-Ice and bureau of reclamation personnel and others were present. Representing the Klamath basin area were Murel Long and Qene DUiant of the Farm ers Frying service: Ed Ore en ot Tulelake; Bill Brissenden of the bureau of reclamation; Harold Bchlefersteln. county weed control supervisor, and Jim Elings. assistant county agent. Professor Virgil Freed of Oregon State college who heads up the weed control research program tor this state, was president of this year's conference. This meeting was the 10th annual meeting of the Western States weed control conference. Started a decade ago largely through the efforts of the late Professor Hyslop of Oregon State college, well known by many in the Klamath basin, it has grown from a three-state meeting attended by only a few to Its present size. Two days of the meeting were de voted to reports on new develop ments in weed control methods, chemicals, as well as reports on weed control research. The remaining day was given over to weed control equipment, both ground and air. Every make and model of the latest equipment was on display as well as weed control chemicals. Research to be carried on this coming season will revolve around the following points: 1. The rate of absorption of the herbicides through the leaves and roots of the plants. 2. The action of the chemical inside the plant. More informa tion is needed as to why a chemi cal such as 3. 4-D regulate or in hibit the growth of the plant. 3. The action of chemicals on the cells of the plant 4. The translocation or move ment of the chemical within the plant After they've accomplished this work they will know why some plants are very susceptible to 1, 4-D and others quite resistant to 2. 4-D. The; will also be able to make more definite recommendations for con tra' of any one particular type of weed. Very little was said about IPC, the chemical for quack grass con trol that received so much publicity last year. Although IPC was used in extensive trials, results were dis appointing all down the line. Cattle Raisers Association Eyed LA GRANDE. Feb. 12 (IP) Exten sion service officials today moved to create a county-wide association of cattle raisers at a meeting here February 12. Burns Bailey, assistant Union county agent, said the proposal to form a cattlemen's association had been under discussion several months and Thursday's meeting will make tentative plans for the organiza tion. It's the value of government se curities which have come due and quit paying interest without the owners cashing them in. Some date back to the middle of the last cen tury. The total has gone up S34.000.0O0 in the last 12 months. Much of the older securities un doubtedly have been lost or de stroyed, officials told a reporter to day, but t.;y are mystified by one recent development: The owners of S26.75O.0O0 of a $758,945,800 issue of bonds called for redemption on October 15 still New Road Cost High SALEM. Feb. 12 Wv-Modernizing America's highway system would cost S2.000.000.000 a year for the next 15 years. State Highway En gineer R, H. Baldock said Wednes day. Baldock. president of the Amer ican Association of State Highway officials, has returned from Wash ington. D. C, where he asked con gress to extend the S5O0.OO0.000 per year federal aid highway program. This program, plus state matching funds, would provide Sl.000.000.000 a year, or just half the amount re quired to do the job. Baldock said. "The problem of road building in this country has become acute due to the neglect of road building dur ing the depression and the war years, and the marked increase in traffic during the past two years,'' he said. He said' he hoped congress would act by April 1 to enable highway commissions to draft new programs so that contracting of work could start by next January 1. Baldock said the senate also is considering reduction of the federal aid funds to S300.000.000 a year. Bonds of that kind usually are owned by banks, insurance compan ies or others who guard them well. Also, such Investors usually collect their money promptly so they can put it to work somewhere else. One possible explanation is that the bonds are owned by persons in foreign countries who: 1. Do not know the treasury called them for redemption several years ahead of the due date, or 2. Prefer to hold paper that is good for dollars any time rather than turning it over to their own governments for local currency. Some of the bonds are continuing to trickle in for the pay-off. About $500,000 worth have come in this month. The government is borrowing money these days at an interest rate averaging 2.15 per cent. So the treasury is saving nearly S7.000.000 a ye- interest by having the use of the money represented by the un- cashed securities. The overdue lot includes almost Sll.500.000 of World War I Liberty bonds, and about S100.000.000 worth of savings bonds Issued In the 1935-38 period.
