Jim. 24 A meeting of members ot the Klamath Indian tribes, called yesterday by Bcldon Kirk, general council chair man, produced very little In the way ot concrete suggestions ol ways to better relations between Klamath reservation and the federal gov ernment. The intent or the meeting was to get recommendations and sug gestions to Improve the "wards ot the government" status of the In dians, but reluctance to talk on the part of most of the persons In at tendance caused the meeting to produce very little. It was planned as a sort of "town forum" and any results, Kirk said, were to be forwarded to the Na tional Congress of American Indians In Washington. Slow Start The chairman, Kirk, had dilli culty getting the meeting started, having to do most of the talking himself, and the only suggestion from the floor that might be called Market Road Work Shapes LA REVIEW, Ore., January 24 The state highway commission has authorised Its Lakevlew resident en gineer, J. S. Sawyer, to make a sur vey of 11 is miles of county roads in the Westside area near Lakeview to establish grade preparatory to improvement and surfacing under the state-federal market road aid program. Although it still appears that the state and federal aid will not reach here for some time, it is held by County Judge J. R. Heckman that if the survey were completed, the county can use its own crews, equip ment and supplies to accomplish much of the preliminary work such as cuts, fills, grading, drainage. Heckman also feels that if the county does much of this work with lu own funds, leaving only the sur facing of many of the county's roads for the state and federal aid, the money from the latter source will be available to improve many more mile, of roads. A total of 68 miles of Lake county roads have been designated as market roads for the state-federal aid program. Sawyer said that he can have his crew begin the survey within a few days so that the county will be able to start its own part of the program in the spring. Chiloquin Set For Hoop Game CHILOQUIN, Jan. 24 A double header basketball game and a dance highlight the local plans for the annual March of Dimes campaign. It was announced this week by Chairman Mrs. Cyril Cook. Rlckys quintet from Klamath Falls will play the local Gienger's team In a basketball tilt on the local floor Saturday with Hal's Sport Shop team and Norval's playing the first game. Next Saturday night a dance will be given In the high school gym nasium with the Rhythm Makers from Klamath Falls furnishing the music. The committee in charge of arrangements: Mr. and Mrs. Harry Elliott, Mr. and Mrs. Dwlght Klr cher, Mr. and Mrs. Earl Hall and Mr. and Mrs. Cyril Cook. Dime containers placed in the local stores are filling and a good response was received from the local school pupils. The students were given cards with five slots in which dimes could be inserted. She said she was very discouraged at the expense of the present ad ministration at Klamath Agency, and also at the bickering going on between factions for and against Uie proposed liquidation of the res ervation. Mrs. McAnulty suggested that members of the tribes be appointed to administrative posts for a period of five or ten years to see if they could do a better Job than white administrators have done. Her suggestion, in cltect. it the reservation is dissolved, the break shouldn't come so sudden the In dians would not be acquainted witn their own affairs. Kirk read a long letter lrom B. O. Courtright, Agency superintendent who is on leave, containing advice similar to that ottered by Mrs. Mc Anulty and pointing out the pitlails which might await the Indian ana his property if he suddenly was taken out from under federal gov ernment wardship status. Kirk had invited persons trom town interested in Indian aliairs to attend the meeting, and expressed disappointment that very lew showed up. Those who spoke briefly on in vitation were Phil Hitchcock, presi dent of the chamber ot commerce, and Malcolm Epley. managing editor of The Herald and News, and Mrs. Frank Brown ot Crystal. Hitchcock assured the Indians that the general leelmg ol Uie white community was to nope that the nervation's problems can be worked out to the best interests ol the Indians. He said there may oe some white persons who look upon the issue as one that may provide economic opportunity lor them, but that Is not the general attituoe. Liquidation Sure Epley suggested uie eventual in evitability of "liquidation" in view ' of the obliteration of racial and physical lines that has been going on for a long time and will con tinue, and cited the advice given in the Courtright letter for Indians to prepare themselves for the inevit able.. He said that people in the white community hesitate to par ticipate in the controversies over reservation issues for fear then actions will be resented by the In dians as "interference and nosi ness." Mrs. Selden Kirk said she hoped the Indians would be given a better "break" in the press, with more news about Indians who do credit able things to offset that about In dians who become Involved in dif ficulties with the law. Wife Slayer Gets Life Sentence VANCOUVER, Wash., Jan. 24 (JP) Clifford C. Spear's wife was found slain Monday. Today he was under a life Imprisonment sentence. The La Center farmer. 46 years old. pleaded guilty yesterday to sec ond degree murder and was sen tenced at once by Superior Court Judge Eugene Cushing. The woman's body was found in Spear's truck at Hillsboro. Ore., when Hillsboro police were attempt ing to locate him to tell him his La Center farmhouse had burned down. Dealings were among the slowest of the past year. A severe cold wave and threats of another storm kept numerous cus tomers away from Wall street. The result was that the ticker tape loafed throughout. The price varia tions generally were in minor frac tions. Slightly mixed tendencies pre vailed near the close. Transfers for the two hours ran to around 350. 000 shares. Caution still was the watchword in financial circles pending more light on taxes, the Marshall plan, disturbing foreign situations and possible new wage demands in var ious luousirics. Portland Wheat Market Strong PORTLAND. Jan. 24 uP Despite midwestcrn futures declines, the Portland cash wh?at market stayed strong this week, with most classes of wheat gaining 2 cents, the U. S. department of agriculture reported today. Hard white Baart wheat gained 10 cent: In response to an active de mand. Generally, however, the strong market arose from light country offerings rather than heavy buying. Principal purchases were for the fed trade and for flour mills manu facturing domestic flour.
