The Doctor Says Sleeping Pills Dangerous By F.DWIN P. JOItlMN. M. I. Written for NBA Hervice Far too many people are given to the dangerous practice of taking a pill or drug whenever they have difficulty In sleeping. In fact, this practice Involves so many people arid la ao hazardous that al least 34 states have laws regulating the sale of sleeping drugs. Most of the sleeping drugs In common use are called barbiturates. These are various combinations of chemical substances called bar bituric acid. They have real uses In medicine and the only objection to moat of them Is that they are often misused. The barbiturates can cause acute poisoning. A group of 13 hospitals, for example, collected 643 cases ot poisoning by these drugs. These patients had taken large overdoses and were sick enough to have to go to a hospital. Undoubtedly, there were many others who had taken a little too much and had merely been slightly sick. Some people are especially sensi tive to the barbiturate drugs. Such persons can gel reactions from only small quantities. It Is also a matter of concern that some people become addicted to barbiturates. They develop a habit and liking which Is difficult to throw off and, of course, may produce harm if it is not. Moat people who develop Uie barbiturate habit start by using , the pills for sleeplessness. The habit usually takes several months or even years to become established, i Gradually, victims have to take larger and larger quantities, while the results are less and less success ful. Poisoning Possible Chronic poisoning is a possible result. One woman, who had taken barbiturates for several months, became mentally Incompetent, lost control of her elimination, lost weight, and hud to be fed with a spoon. Sleeping drugs should be taken with caution. They act on the nervous system and on other parts of the body. They should be avoid ed, except when there is some real reason for using them. Even then the use of sleeping pills should not be continued without the advice of a physician. The Doctor Answers QUESTION: What causes per spiration on my nose and forehead while I eat? ANSWER: A few people complain of sweating while eating. The cause Is probably a nervous reaction, con nected with stimulation of the "sympathetic nervous syatem" by the act of chewing or by the food.
