'T3 N . ... lr,k lajil EfLET By MALCOLM Kl'I.EV THE first Christmas tree within my memory was not an evergreen such as will be found In virtually every Klamath nome this Christmas. As I remember It, it was Just f the branch off some deciduous tree of the type that grows In the Mid west. Maybe It was a piece off a fruit tree. At any rate, it was Just bare limb with a few twigs on it. My mother took while t'loth and cotton and dressed It up to look like a tree In winter, and It was a grand and beautiful sight to my four-year-old eyes. That was tn Ncbraka, and It ts my opinion that there was not an evergreen Christmas tree then in a house in the little town In which I lived. Maybe they have them there now, but my childhood recollection is that nobody thought of carting real Christmas trees into that barren prairie country. But the tree we had was a dandy, we had a happy time around it. and looking back now, I can see that It was Just as good as the fanciest tree in the finest home anywhere, Recollections SOME other early day Christmas recollections: The real candles that we used to put in holders and fasten on Christmas trees, averting a tire only because the cause was worthy . . . The toy store with miniature packages, exactly like those in the local retail houses, that was a thrill of my fifth Christmas . . . The pasture gully that provided a slope for our Christmas sleds, with plenty of Midwestern snow for sliding . . . The change from Christmas snow to Christmas rain when we moved from Nebraska to Western Oregon . . . The wonderful merchandise of ferings in a country general store In our little Oregon home town . . . The first time I appeared on a Christmas program, at a little Nebraska country church ... I recited "Hickory. Dlckery Dock" . . . My next appearance, w hen I recited "Oh Little Town of Bethlehem" and have never forgotten the words . . . Waiting with watering mouth down at the end of the table while the turkey was carved, with com pany served first, dang it . . . Cutting a Christmas tree on an Oregon hillside that looked perfectly symmetri cal, and finding it badly lopsided iu the living room . . . the thrill of the day that meant Christmas vacation from school, when the teacher was always a little less stern and everybody did a lot of chattering about pleasant tilings . . I'll make one guess: You'd wish that somewhere in the troubled places of our sorry world there might be raised a won drolls Christmas tree, so tall the ' silver star of Bethlehem upon Its top would touch the sky, that all Blight see. Its great, green boughs would bend beneath the tokens of good-will, and round its base would gather a vast choir of all races who would carol songs of peace. Fanciful, isn't it? Well, there's little harm in wishing. Perhaps if we wish hard enough, our vision may come true. Reminiscence of what set your correspondent dreaming. To those of us who live in climes which favor evergreens, the Christmas tree I has come to be the symbol of the day. I've spent the anniversary in far places: on the fighting front of a great war in the England of Dickens' Christmas carol in gay Paree in far off India in Bethle hem beside the holy manger. Often, of course, there's been no j tree, and I have felt some vital thing was missing from the scene. Likely that feeling is a heritage of childhood In a Vermont parsonage in days when Yuletlde's main at traction was the heavy-laden tree in the old church a tree so high that, in youthful eyes. It seemed in deed as though it might reach to the sky, like the evergreen of our big wish today. So at this Christmas time I was happy to receive from my good friend Tom Keene. editor of the Elkhart (Indiana) Daily Truth, a letter of good cheer and a prose poem which he composed about a Christmas tree. Tom has warmth of heart for nature and for his fellow ' men. and often turns to the poetic to record his thoughts. STATIC By EDNA KILLMF.YER Picket Parades For Yule Money PORTLAND. Dec. 24 1.41 A picket paraded in front of an opti cal laboratory today just because he needed the money for Christmas. The AFL central labor council yesterday directed the Optical Workers' union to withdraw the picket because the labor dispute had not been cleared through the council. Ted Fry. union business agent, said the union would com plybut not today, because the man needed his picket pay for Christmas. The announcement that Groucho Marx will switch to Wednesday nights at 8:30 beginning next week has caused quite a furor around town from those wondering who. of ABC's big Wednesday night line up, would be out. It s the Jack Paar show that has been cancelled. The reason ts something only those In command know, but we'll be sorry to see him go. It's our humble opin ion that his is one of the best com edy shows on the airways, and cer tainly worthy of a better fate. He'll drop out soon after the first of the year but. anyway, he will be on to night 8:30, 1450 on your dial. Still more in the holiday line-up for ABC and KFLW Is the re broadcast of the story of the Nativ ity. It came over on the "Greatest Story" broadcast Sunday afternoon, and by popular demand will be In the Christmas eve limelight as well. It s 11:30, LW. Heading tjie special broadcasts from KFJI, Don Lee Mutual, Is the midnight mass from Sacred Heart Catholic church tonight. Dick Ma- , guire will be commentator, and the program is scheduled to start with background information and music ! at 11:30. The mass will begin at 1 midnight. This is the first time JI has undertaken the broadcast of the very beautiful Christmas serv ice. There you have It. Santa sighed. "Most of the little girls still want dolls, but the boys so many of them want those new - tangled atom pistols and rocket guns. It takes a lot of research." He climbed into his sled. Just then Mrs. Claus came running out with a big, red muffler. "You wear this," she said stern ly "I don't want you to come back sniffing with a sore throat like you did last year." Santa made a face, but he let her wrap the muffler around his neck. The eight reindeer bent for ward In their harness, but the big sled hardly moved at first.
