Hhe has iiiude good In the big city. Hhe did It by doing Halo thing well. Hhe atlll com back lialf-a-day each week for old thnea' auka and niakea our house loud with her luughter. I think she hua the glad dest heart or 'anyone I ever knew. Jeanie la u maid, a husky, friendly negro girl with white teeth, dink eye and a complexion as iioft n the patina on old rosewood. Hhe Isn't Just an ordlnnry .mild, Hhe's the kind .hut housewives fight and scheme agulnat each other tor. Most any wqmnn would rink losing her dearest friend to lure Jennie away. Hhe ciime hero yoara ago trom Ciillfornla to bo again with Ihe sla ter who rained her after their inolh-' or died. During the and yearn of the deprennhm when John wero scuroe, Jeunle became her tamlly's loyal brrudwlnncr. Hhe was the only one able to find work. Jennie could never be out ot a Job. Bcrluiplng wives would tear up the household budget rather than let Jeunle go. Depression Job Hhe first marled coining to our houne when the deprennlon was lift ing. Hhe got fifty cents an hour then and worked for half a dozen people. The flrnt day she came sho rather depressed my wife. "Hhe works no fiut," said Frances, "I can't tell her enough thing to do lo keep her busy." When she left, the place was spick-and-span In a new way. Hhe hua been coining ever since. Euch time before leaving she accepts a good nip of something to keep her warm on the subway ride up to llnrlein. I think she rubs some of her own warm grin Into tho house hold brans and silver, for they gleam as they never did before. Jeanie gets no much tun out of her work II make some people envious, iter hobby Is baseball. I don't think nhe has ever gone to a game, but she listens to them en the radio and reads all tha newspaper accounts. For a while she worked Saturday niter noons In a hand laundry. It wo hoi hard work In summertime IroiUng the shirts, and she used to turn on the radio to listen to the ball game. Once she got tickled over a Dlav I and laughed so loud the proprietor, soured from years of washing other people's linen, exclaimed crossly: "Vou have so much fun I think you should be paying me to work here." Jeanie, who knew she did more work than any two other girls, just laughed at him and said, "I never could help enjoying myself." Kltiy Job During thj war she got a maid's Job on the stuff of a rluy mldtown apartment hotel, and ever since she's been In the big money. The rich people there have really taken care of her. A girl like Jeanl dnesnlt come their way often. They like to tell her their tangled marital trou bles, and they like the luster she leaves behind. Whatever she lifts her work-worn hands from shines. The $45 a week salary Is the smaller purl of her earnings. Her tips are liberal and the wealthy wo men Rive her discarded dresses more expensive than she could buy her self. One woman gave her 110 a week extra and, leaving for the summer, she handed Jeanie 176 and said: "Just look Into my apartment every once in avhlle." But In the evenings and on her day off Jeanie still come back tireless and merry to clean for friends who helped her In leaner days. One old lady In financial straits for whom Jeanie still labors an entire evening for one dollar In remembrance of punt kindnesses, ssld : "I'll bet you've got a few hundred dollars hidden behind a picture somewhere." Jeanie laughed and laughed be cause she's probably got thousands. All these years she's been saving for the time when she could have a home of her own to stay In and keep clean, Hhe's cleaned so m&ny homes for other people. She laugli all the time now. For noon her boy irlend Is getting out of the navy. , y a spi a i w" rvvWATER HEATIR.
