However, the tremendous heat created involve a problem of shielding when it come to use in cars. The other model, a turbo-jet. produce 150 pounds of thrust yet weighs only 85 pounds. Boeing explains that a pound of thrust Is roughly equivalent to one horse power but that thl is true only at an air speea oi in mnes u hour. The turbo-let is 2 Inches by 22 Inches In maximum diameter. High velocity exhaust gases, headed to 1500 desrees fahrenheit in two burner chambers, drive a 7 t Inch turbine wheel. Boeing says It can be used as a starter engine for larger Jet unit or turbines and a a thrust source for missile, glide bombs or small airplane. The engine, cooled by itself, use either gasoline or kerosene. The fuel 1 ignited by spark plug and speed is controlled by a throttle. Cost of operation as compared with conventional engine ha not been definitely determined but Boe ing believe, on the basis of horse power developed, it would ne soout. the same. There are only two main moving part, the .turbine and the com pressor, and oecause oi ine sim plicity of construction Boeing lays .the engines should be cheap to build in quantity.
