HI NDI ItNON There are three reasons for pi nu ll )K ornamental or simile trees. These icasona art to promote vliior and heallhfulneas, to control form of the tree, and to modify flowering. Ac complishment nl the enda Kcitcr ally requires Iraa priiiilim than la usually suppuaed and much less than la generally rarrlrd out. Prunlni lionld only be done after carrful analy.ila of each tree, kerpliiK the sbove factnra III mind. It la better not to prune at all than to prune without a reasonably good Idea of (lit reaulU desired. There la a great tendem-y to prima without thought to appearance, growth and thrift of the tree, rlevere cutting la sckltini required but treea should lie ob served frefiueiitly to make ure thnt needed pruning la done at the proper tune. 1'runliif tor Health j rrunin lor vigor arm iirauniui aU cniMiiita of the removal of dead or dying wood and broken or spill llmba. milting off atliba that have resulted either from the breaking of llmba or from Improperly made cut In previous primings and the re moval of crossing. Interfering branrhea and removing the Up to uffsrt root Injury due to transplant ing or other causes. Dead, dying jind broken branchea should always be removed, the sooner the better. Much removal aula early healing of the wound, thus reducing the danger or In the case or shrubs, buck even to the root, although live wood may be removed. All atuln should be promptly removed. Cross branches or llmba that grow parallel with each other should be removed early. Narrow crotches are especially un desirable when the brandies are growing upright. They should be taken out when the trees are young. The reason for this Is that such crotches split very easily. Vigor Increased Vigor of plants la often Increased by reducing lop growth to ability of the roots to supply necessary plant food esiieclally moisture. This should be done particularly with newly planted treea and shrubs and may be beneficial when plants are not growing as they should, although provided with sufficient food and moisture. A balanced pruning may be undertaken whenever the root system has been mutilated or dis turbed. This Is particularly true of plants that have been dug from the wild, as generally a large part of the root system la cut off. Pruning to promote vigor, how ever, should hot be confused or used as an excuse for pruning severely where lark of vigor Is not evident or root destruction has hot been done. Many eople prune treea because of a desire U cut severely. MnnV trees are ruined by tills method due to Improiier cutting of tops and limbs thereby causing weaknesses and Insect Injury and In addition completely spoiling the appearance of the tree. A tree after all la sup posed to be thing of beauty and balance rather than a stump with a tew mlscellaneoua sprouts grow ing on the side. Natural form Pruning tor form requires that the tree be kept as near lla natural Cool, Cool Water For Thirst Acres ). 411 fM' ytt IMSS-- f - rft r3 Ha- ...iswes-snr. 4 rr,:yfrTr2J s?vr4 I -o .! . This dam, built by the V. H. bureau of reclamation In 1923, is 32 feet high, SIS feet lonr and la used to raise the water In Lost river which la supplied from (Tear Lske reservoir, and to divert It to the west canal for Irrigating farm lands west of Langell valley. Farm Price Spiral Dying CORVALLIfl, May B lPI - The upyard aplraling of farm land price j In Oregon 1 slowing down, the Ore- : gon State college extension service reported today. 1 The average price of farm land j Increased ( per cent In the year ending March 1, boosting the level , to Bl per cent above the 135-13 ' level. j The report noted the Jump was the amallest In several years and re- ' fleeted the levellng-off of farm land I prices throughout the west. In removing dead branches the best method is to cut back to the nearest living crotch that liilurloui decay or organisms I form and condition as possible. Pre quently cutting or snearing causes many different shapes and forms tuuiatural to treea and Is not in keeping with the true shape of the tree In question. In pruning to Im prove appearance, it should be kept constantly In mind that the natural form of the plant Is the most at tractive. Often trees need some help to maintain this form such as the removal of lower branchea. cross branches and certain branches that may be running wild, causing local deformities. Any attempt to reform the plant or tree generally Is not satisfactory and a monstrosity usually results. Any such tree might better be re moved completely. In planting young treea It Is well to keep In mind the future form of the tree and trim accordingly. Many young treea are ruined by Improiier pruning and prevented from ever attaining their natural shaiie. Decay organisms are reduced considerably by painting cut surface of the wound. (toad Job A good pruning Job l the Siberian elm on the north aide of the post office building. This tree was In the habit of forming narrow crotches and consequent splitting and break ing of limbs. The present plan of trimming was outlined by H. B. Ilayden. then manager of the Klam ath project. U. 8. bureau of recla mation, and carried out by post of fice employes. Tills tree retains Ita tree-like form and at the ssme time will not split and break as readily as It did before proper pruning waa done. Unless there la a definite reason for pruning an ornamental tree, It Is best not to prune at all. Par more damage has been done to the beau ty of ornamental treea In Klamath Palls by pruning than any good ever accomplished. Soil Survey Finished Here A heavy Work load lies ahead In soil conservation work. Kenneth W. Dahl. conservationist, told the Poe valley district board of supervisors at a meeting held In the county agent a office last week. !ehl reviewed accompllshmeuta of the district, showing completion of a soil survey of the entire area, for which a rrirt I being prepared now. The aurvey shows soil types, slope, degree of erosion, present land use and arras where alkali presents a problem. Bolls Information Is used In locating drains and In planning land leveling i Borne progress has already been made in the comlrtirtlou of drains, land leveling and In the revision of irtgatlon systems In the Poe valley ittstrlrt, "'(' Topographic sur v.fi for land leveling are now being made on farm where work will be Initiated after harvest. K. Lalon Htephens, project en gineer ot the bureau of reclamation, reported on the pronoscd relocation of the Lost river channel and the beneficial effects which could be ex pected. This proosed development is a part of a larger Job Invalvln channel Improvement In Langell valley, together with construction of Boundary dam and enlargement of the diversion ranal. Plana were laid at the meetlmr for operations for the remainder of the year. V. O. Brown waa re-elected supervisor and took the oath of of fice. Arthur W. Brhaunp s re. circled as secretary and Wilbur E. Helling will continue as chairman. Other members of the board are Clrorge Stevenson and Rex E. High. The dog tick that spreads the Kocky mountain spotted fever Is an other of the many pests for which OUT la proving a practical and In expensive control. Tills is good news for mothers who have worried over Hie possibility of tlcka attaching to children even when they were play ing safely In the back yard or on the school or community playground. A light dusting with 10 per cent DDT powder at the rate ol one ounce to 1000 square feet of area covered with grass, weeds or shrubs, la recommended by the U. 8. de partment of agriculture as a simple and effective way of killing the ticks. One dusting will usually protect for the tick season. The light dusting, aaya Dr. E. F. Knlpllng of the bureau of entomolo gy and plant quarantine, will not be dangerous to children and pet. It will make safer the plav areas where children should be protected as well as Kslble during the tick season. In town and In rural area such a dusting, or spraying with a DDT prav. along the edars of psths and roadways, also reduces the tick hnmrd. Bureau studies of the habits of the ticks show that the pet tend to crawl toward paths and road wavs. prolwblv attracted bv the scent of plowing animals, Including human beings. A DDT treatment for a few feet on each side of a path or road will kill the ticks that have con centrated there and the long time effoct of DDT treatment Is waiting for tick that crawl into the treated xone later. Rocky mountain spotted fever Is a disease that rightly causes concern to mothers. Many systematically ioiiow the advice ol the entomolo I gist to look over the children care- luuy peiore oca time to make sure of removing tick picked up during the day. A tick does not ordinarily trans mit the disease until It ha been at tached for several hours, but over night attachment allows ample time If the tick is carrying the disease. The entomologist caution persons handling ticks, because they may get the disease In this manner. Just pick the ticks off with tweexers. and avoid crushing them on the skin.
