Air Routt To Tokyo Agreed On TOKYO, April 32 P Far East air force headquarters announced Monday that army and navy offi cial of the Far Ent. Alaskan and Pacific command have established the Tokyo-Adak-8ealUe route as a major airway to be followed by military and civilian planes be tween the United States and Japan. Joe Pechanece of the Pacific Northwest forest and range experi ment station talked upon the work his ot-ftaniaiUon was doing to find a solution to the problem of over grazed ranges. He held that there was hope for a lot of range land that many people have felt had gone so far as to be unreclatm uble. He pointed out that reseed- ing and Judicial management was- the only logical solution lor many problem areits. Mis talk was illus trated by photographs showing the dtfterent types of rangeland In their native state as compared to the same types that had been overgrased. Members of the so ciety who had a chance to view the results obtained on this pro ject have become enthusiastic on the possibilities of resettling over grazed ranges. The Coffee. Pot area takes In a flat on the watershed of the Chewaucan river. In the fall of 1SM4, i7 acres were reaeeded huge ly to crested wheat grass. The plants obtained from this seeding are now well established and thrifty. Ranger Oft expects that this year will see considerable natural reseedlng take place. The land was first prepared by Dixie harrowing and then the planting followed by drilling At the seed at the rate of nine pounds per acre. Sample plots have Uo been established here to lest other types of grass thought to be suitable for reseedlng ranges in this area; so far. three other species besides the crested wheat are showing promise. These other wheat grasses are known as long-headed. Intermediate and tall oats. This Coltce Pot area at one time had been an area of high graslng capacity. Overgrasing had de stroyed all the desirable grass spe cies and let the area open to ero sion. The stream courses through the bottom laud had been deepen ed by erosion thus lowering the water table and allowing the area to be invaded by sagebrush and other unpalatable types of plants. Thus betore reseedlng. this area was a typical dry sagebrush flat. In order to raise the water table and restore it to its original eleva tion, many small dams have been constructed In the water wurses through the area. These dams are constructed from fir boughs held down by boulders. The dams were made 18 inches high and so placed in the stream channels that the water "backed up by one dam reaches the foot of the dam above it. These dams were doing an ex cellent Job of catching silt and holding water. Haddock, secretary of the CIO maritime department, said the two are Hairy Bridges, president of the International Longshoremen's and Warehousemen's union, and Huiih llryaou, head of the Marine Cooks and Stewards. ' Gem Cutting Talk Slated The Klamath Mineral club will meet Thursday evening, April 24. In the chamber of commerce rooms, 13 Main street, at 8 p. m. John Yadon will talk about the equipment needed by a beginner who wishes to start rutting and polishing auate and similar semi- fireclous gem material. The meet ng to follow this talk will be an open forum for the discussion of members' lapidary equipment. The gem stone alexandrite will also be discussed.
