A letter from the Southern Pacific news bureau points out tho reason for tho present short age of freight cars us Indicated In an editorial from the current Issue of Hallway Age. Tho editorial reads In part: 'The Inability of tho railways to supply enough freight cars to shippers which is growing steadily worse and constitutes a bruko of Increasing scrlousnoss on the maintenance and Increase of national production Is due to the fact that the number of cam in existence is declining when it should be increasing, and this in turn is due to a single cause, namely, an Inadequate supply of steel." "Not only are Insufficient freight cars being built, but the current supply of materials Is inadequate to keep at a minimum the number of cars out of service awaiting repairs." The report of the Southern Pacific that it is filling Its refrigerator car orders 100 per cent, while the Great Northern reports that it is unable to get a single car in the basin, is presenting some what of a paradox to Klamath basin shippers. Homer D. So fur, Hunscom said, the directives huve been sending cars everywhere except to Klumath. Hunscom staled that the shortage begun about two weeks ago, and tho section hardest hit is down in the Ma tin district where farmers now have to truck their spuds seven or eight miles to reach an SP connection. Lloyd Stitt, the SP's district agent, explained why his outfit had plenty of cars while the GN had none by pointing out that the SP merely ran their empties from Ogden, Utah, through Klamath Fulls, where they were louded with potatoes for the trip south. Ifo expluined that the empties arc usually consigned for the California farm areas anyway, and the SP merely tukes advantage of tho transfer to carry Klamath pota toes to the market. Hanscom said that the Great Northern was attempting to get the ICC to transfer a substan tial number of cars to the basin, and the problem is being pre sented to them for study. Sandy, director of the state department of vet eran's affairs, will be in Klamath Falls tomorrow, Saturday, to supervise the lot drawing for awarding 43 pieces of used con struction and automotive equip ment to veterans, it was an nounced today. The drawing Is scheduled for 3:30 d. m. at the naval air base. Ted Case, Klamath Falls selec tive service director, and Dave Hoss, former American Legion post commander, will assist San dy with the drawing. WAA said that the sale is re stricted to World War II vet erans, whose only identification requirements are discharge pa- ficrs. Prospective buyers may nspect the equipment from 8 a. m. to 3 p. m. Each veteran will be allowed three chances. WAA emphasized that veterans must be present to complete the pur-1 cnasc. Air Rescue Unit Formed The Klamath Air Search and Rescue unit was formed by a group of local fliers at a meeting at the chamber of commerce last night. Purpose of the organiza tion is to be searching for and rescuing downed aircraft as welt as lost hunters, skiers and others. Officers of '.he new organiza tion are Ray Royce, president: Cliff Hogue, vice president, and Joe Hicks, secretary-treasurer. The meeting was called by Ray Royce and Pete Newblll for the sole purpose if forming this or ganization, inasmuch as the in creased amount of local flying as well as transit flying in the Klamath area necessitated the formation of some organization to render this service. It was pointed out at this meeting that last year on five different occasions need for this type of rescue unit prevailed. They all decided that it would be necessary to get some funds to start the organization off so all subscribed to payment of a $5 initiation fee and agreed to meet on Tuesday, March 18, at the airport to further organize the unit. It wrs agreed by the group that all time devoted by the members to search and res cue work would be entirely vol untary and donated but that the unit should find some way of financing at least the cost of gasoline for the use of members' aircraft in this work. The group is anxious to obtain a large membership of all in terested in 'lying and search and 'ID SQAI.D ml, Klaiallr r.n., Or. rescue work of any kind, for In search and rescue work flying is Just part of the required effort; each piano needing an observer as well as a illot and ground crews necessary to follow up and perform the actual rescue service.
