Rural Homes Field For Electricity Approximately 40 ier cent of rural homemakers having elec tricity are Interested In purchas , lng new equipment, according to information in a national survey which reached the office of the county home demonstration agent, Mrs. Winnifred GiUen, this week. In July, 1946, 69 per cent of all Oregon farm : homes were electrified, Mrs. Gillcn adds. - , Information collected In the survey Is being used in a aeries of extension meetings in various counties of the state dealing with the selection and use of electrical equipment, where home demonstration agents are showing pictures and conducting discussions of post-war refriger - ators, electric ranges, electric washing machines and ironers. Bulletins issued by home man agement experts of the Oregon State college are available from Mrs. Gillen's office, (room 208, post office building) giving de tailed information on the points to be considered in buying elec trical equipment for the home. In 56 per cent of the rural homes the kitchen range serves as a means of heat, Mrs. Gillen points out Most of these homes will retain the wood range when an electric range is pur chased. Dirty work clothes make the washing machine the most used large piece of electrical equip ment in the farm home. The au tomatic machine has one of the greatest developments in mod ern household labor saving ap pliances, say Oregon State col lege specialists. This machine washes, rinses and spins the clothes dry enough to hang them out. From 2 to 3 cents an hour is the estimated cost of electric current for the automatic, which is practically the same aa that for any washing machine. Bulletins which may be ob tained free of charge on large electrical equipment from coun ty extension offices in the post office building in Klamath Falls, are: "Selecting An Electric Range," "Selecting an Electric Washing Machine," and the new publication of the United States department of agriculture, "How to Choose and Use Your Refrigerator." Summer Songsters Must Be Fed During Winter Weather Br JOY BIGGS Bird tracks over the snow are a mute reminder that our feathered friends must be cared for in hard times if we are to enjoy their cheery notes in the warmer seasons. Bird lovers all over the city are following regular systems for feeding their friends now that the natural supply of seeds is covered with snow. Suet seems to be a "must" on the winter diet for birds and an approved method of feeding this is to tack a strip of suet high in a tree. This keeps it from house hold pets and varmints. For quail, however, suet should be crumbled and scattered near the brushy places they use for cover. A platform with a guard rail nailed to a post is also a good ilace to lay the suet. By fasten ng it down any one bird is prevented from making off with the whole piece and numbers of birds can pick at it for hours. Persons living in apartment nouses ana where they have no yards can still do their part in keeping the songsters alive through the winter bv placing food on window ledges and in window feed boxes. A window by the breakfast table is a pleas ant place to feed the birds as their behavior can be observed through the pane without fright ening them. That birds need water too, should not be forgotten. When most of their water sources are frozen over and the water they do get is ice cold, it is a good idea to put out wide, shallow dishes of warm water. Large coveys of quail can be seen making regular daily for ages for the food scattered for them by residents along JLake- snore drive. While some rest dents along the drive report an unusual number of quail this winter, others seem to have missed seeing any of the little birds, which looks like the birds may change their boarding places, choosing the ones that servo what they like best. Quail seem to huddle in close bunches in the cold weather and probably all follow the leader to his favor its feeding spot. Tho large Klamath pelicans left the lake a couple of months ago, staying longer than usual because of the mild winter here. After the pelicans wore gone, ducks stayed, nesting in the niles along the lake's edge, safe from the hunters and the sound of their guns.
