Boyle's Column War Song Over For Vaunied C-47, Hero Of Battle Skies By HAL BOYLE ABOARD AN AIRPLANE NEARING DENVER A') Peace hai turned the old workhorse of the army air corps back tnto a flying clothes horse. They've gone and tidied up the C-47 again, and put her back in commercial harness Just like a doughboy buck sergeant re turned to his former job in a hoe store. She no longer wears a painted robe of tattered olive drab. Her aides are sleek silver, and inside she Is cushioned and soft and clean. Each seat has a separate reading light, and there is a rack stocked with leather - covered copies of the latest magazines. Every few moments a neat smiling stewardess comes through to ask: "May I bring you some cof fee or a cup of hot chocolate? Will you have some gum?" Outside in the darkness two sturdy props whir the ship through the charted air to the certainty of a velvet landing where warmth and light and porters wait. And the sleek, soft customers stretcn out m com fortable seats, boredly passing the time until Journey's end. Adventure Gone Where is the old mystery and adventure? They shouldn't have done this to the C-47, the once raffish sky queen of the battle zones, the American ambassador with wings. What a gal she was! She car ried a thousand things to army troops all over the world. Plas ma and food for "Vinegar Joe" in Burma and China, paratroop- ers to help Mark Clark turn back the German tide at Saler no, sasolme to keep "Old Blood and Guts" roaring across France after the battered nazi legions. She brought up tank parts and truck tires, sad-eyed battle re placement.'! and visiting digni taries, mail and Christmas tur kevs. bullets and canned beef. And she carried no guns. She brought back tired wound ed, who wept in gratitude for tho sanctuary of her thin sides and marked her with blood and mud. It was something to ride her in those days. You sat on an aluminum bucket seat until your rump gave out. Then you unrolled a blanket on the vi brating floor and napped with a steel helmet (or a pillow, some times the pilot came back and sat in on the poker games. If thti passengers ran out of rood, the crew usually had an extra few packages of K-rations. And they had ail the gossip from the different fields. Ph. 8417 Coast Guard Station Open A roast guard recruiting sta tion has been opened in the Judge's chambers of the county courthouse, room one. The sta tion was opened Monday morn ing by CBM M. A. Jordan and BM 1c J. R. Comer. Jordan said that the station was to bo open six days per week and all Inter ested in the coast uard should contact them at the office. Jordan pointed out that all re enlistmcnts of men from the coast guard or navy would be placed in the 13th district. Origi nal enlistments, he said, would be for a period of three years and the enlistees would be en tered as seamen 2c, instead of apprentice seamen, as has been done formerly. Ex-army or ma rine enlistees will be rated as i'c seamen, and ox-navy or coast guardsmen will be given their previous rating in the service.
