July 13 VP) The fistic faithful didn't care much today about whether Sugar Ray Robinson knocked southpaw Joe Curcio out in the first or second round at Madi son Square Garden last night. They were wondering more about Just what walloper, short of Joe Louis himself, could handle Welterweight Sugar Ray in the manner approved by the, experts. The sugar man from Harlem took only one lump to stir up Joe, the southpaw swatter out of Jersey. This "lump" of a left hook landed just as the bell rang end ing the first round of their scheduled ten-rounder. And in asmuch as Southpaw Joe was still flat on his back when the Dell sounded to begin the sec ond round, it didn't make much difference whether the folks figured the payoff should be for the first or second session.
