Oak Ridge Atomic Plant Turns To Works Of Peace i OAK RIDGE, Tonn., June 14 The RrcHt, shielded oveus that can make atom bomb In- Jiredlcnts arc pioneering today n a new Job producing ma terial! earmarked to serve science, medicine and industry in peacetime. Th( fhe army's Manhattan engin eer district, creators of the world's deadliest weapon, dis closed the production envisions "nationwide distribution" of radioactive substances made in tne same furnaces that produced the heart of the A-bomb. ' And the great ovens, now pro ducing limited quantities of these humanitarian by-products of atomic energy, arc being geared for the army's objective of "large scale" availability of products which they declared ''may well have far-reaching im portance irt peace-time research in physics, chemistry, metal lurgy and the medical sciences." ; Meanwhile, the army an nounced that hospitals, univer sities, and similar institutions 01 groups could make immed iate application for the small quantities of materials avail able. , Reasonable Charges A "reasonable charge" will be made to "cover the out-of-pocket" costs to the United ptates the announcement said. The announcement said that while present production would be increased as rapidly as pos sible "it will probably be im possible to meet all the demands of the country until additional facilities are built specifically ; tor (radioactive suDstances) pro duction. This Is not contem plated in the immediate future." Declaring that approximately 1 100 different radioactive sub-1 stances materials that give j pff invisible rays would be i obtainable "in varying quanti-' ties," from the atom bomb pro ject, the war department's state ment asserted: "They will be used In two important ways: "First as tracer atoms or tracers for following the course of atoms In chemical, bio logical and technical processes. "And possibly second, after considerable research, as thera peutic (treatment) agents for treatment of certain special dis eases." Trace Elements The reason they can be used as "tracers" in various scientific processes is that they can be mixed with the stable form of their own element and em ployed to trace the whereabouts of that element. The rays given off by the radioactive isotopes can be detected by sensitive in struments, even when the ma terial -s coursing through the human body. Their role as possible ther apeutic agents in the treatment of certain diseases stems from the fact that they emit power ful rays which may prove to have a beneficial effect on dis eased tissue. Radium is an example of a radioactive substance that oc curs in nature. Radium is not pioduced in the atomic piles. Radioactive phosphorous al ready has been used in the treat ment of leukemia, and radio active iodine has been employed against disease of the thyroid gland. But the Manhattan scientists declare that the small quantities of isotopes produced by cyclo trons before the war limited the scope of research done and the number of persons using radio isotopes. Long-Time Resident Passes In Newport NEWPORT, June 14 (P) Funeral services were planned today for Andrew Lee Porter, 81, who reputedly had lived in Lincoln county longer than any other white man. Porter, who died at his home Wednesday night, had lived in this area for 56 years 20 as city engineer. He also was a member of the Port of Newport commission. He was born at Oakville in 186S. Tractor Firm To Be Opened The Klamath Tractor and Im plement company, which opens tomorrow, has been appointed authorized sales and service dealers for the Ford tractors with Ferguson system and Fer guson farm implements for this area, it was announced today by olficials of the Balsiger Motor company. The new company will be a separate division of Balsiger's, and will offer complete Ford Ferguson service, with a com- filete stock of parts, and special y trained personnel. Dale Throckmorton, who has been field service man for R. M, Wade & Co., northwest distrib utors for Ford-Ferguson, will manage the new firm. Throck morton, an Oregon State grad uate in agriculture, was with Wade for over three years. Floyd Patty, Rod Smith, Jim Dougherty and Arthur Brown will also be associated with the firm, which is located on Main street in the Balsiger building.
